Introduction to Emmanuelle Beart.

Emmanuelle Beart is a French actress of some considerable fame, appearing in some of the best known World Cinema films to come from France.  Manon Des Sources (part 2 of Jean de Florette) was the first hit film that made her the top French actress she is today.  Following Manon des Sources she was in a string of hit films such as Belle Noiseuse, Un Coeur en Hiver and L' Enfer.

Most of the English speaking world first encountered her in Mission: Impossible, this was an American big budget film starring Tom Cruise and a host of other well known Hollywood actors.  Unfortunately she was relegated to a "clothes horse" part, this has lead to many people seeing her as nothing more than a "babe", which her previous films show is not the case, she is also a highly talented actress.   She has played many highly challenging roles and won many awards for best actress and been nominated for even more.  The box office failure of the two American films she has been in, Date with an Angel and Mission: Impossible, probably mean she will not return to Hollywood again.  I am hopeful that directors in the English Cinema may persuade her to do some more English speaking films, particularly as English cinema is far more similar to French cinema than Hollywood.

Most recently she has starred in Don Juan, which seems to have flopped in France and as a result is unlikely to be internationally released except on video.  She seems to have been unfortunate recently as all her recent films have not been nearly as popular in France or abroad as expected, Don Juan (1998), Nelly et M. Arnaud (1995), Une Femme Francaise (1995) and of course Mission Impossible (1996).  She has now got two children (but remains unmarried) which may explain why she has done so few films recently.  She has however been in the Theatre and been quite successful in "Playing with Fire".

You may also have seen Emmanuelle Beart as the Face of Dior, in some of the many Dior adverts for their makeup.  She has also become an ambassador for UNICEF, in a bid to give something back to the world.

Why do I write these web sites about Emmanuelle Beart?  Quite simply, she is my favourite actress.  I love watching films and I am a fan of World Cinema.  World Cinema films rarely have the budget of Hollywood but what they lack in that they more than make up for in script, plot, acting and often cinematography.  I like films that make me think and feel.  Emmanuelle Beart is not only beautiful but highly talented and has played a wide range of roles.  What sets her apart from other actresses however is her passion, her expressions and ability to convincingly become whoever she wants to be.  For her part in Un Coeur en Hiver she practised the Violin everyday for a year before they filmed so that she would be convincing in the part, she was more than convincing, you could believe she actually was a professional violinist gifted since birth.
