The Plot

I know what a few of you are probably thinking..."there's a plot? To a tv show about someone who kills vampires in a Bevery Hills setting?". Well let me tell you, Buffy has many problems in her life, some that we've probably been through, like the trouble of dating and fitting in, or the perils of dealing with an obnoxious snob. Others that we'll never understand, like having to deal with the possibility of death at the hand of a vampire king. Overall, I must say, that the storyline can seem somewhat loose when you look at it from an outsiders view, but once you've seen a couple of episodes you'll see why it's such a hit.

The Long and Short of it...

Now I've left some bit and pieces out. To get it you've gotta either read the bios of each character or watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer on the WB.

Buffy is your average 16 year old girl. She worries about how she looks, what boys think of her and what position she holds in society. She's just moved to the small, very small, town of Sunnydale (California) from Los Angeles, due to a few 'minor' problems at her old school, the largest being that she burned down the school. And it's not like she could explain the reason for the disaster, "But there were vampires in it!..."...I don't think that that'd cut it.

Most of her first day is spent trying to get a feel for her new school and meet some new friends. Although at the beginning it seems like she's going to fit in with Cordelia, Ms. Popularity, and her groupies it turns out that she's more at home with the outsiders, a girl named Willow -- who is smarter than most of the girls and therefore a nerd (whatever) as well as being a computer whiz, and Xander -- an average guy, not especially good at sports...or school...or approaching girls...or...well let's just say he's a guy who hasn't totally found his self-confidence (which you'd think would be very normal). The three of them, along with the school librarian, Rupert Giles (the "Watcher"(see his bio for more)), stay up till all hours of the night fighting the unknown...anything from vampires to a giant praying mantis to a demon trapped in a computer. The main plot continues to follow this path as Buffy realizes her destiny and responsibility, Giles learns how to teach Buffy as a watcher and surrogate father, Xander tries to express his feelings for Buffy, and Willow tries to help Buffy and win Xander's heart.

Footnote: With a plot like this, some other tv shows would run into dead ends...I mean, what do you do when you run out of ideas for monsters or demons, and how believable are these supporting characters. That's what I like about the show, it's written in such a fashion that you can't really prove whether it's possible or not. I'm not saying I believe in all that stuff, or that I don't, but with such amazing writing and acting, you can enjoy the show either way!
