The Miki Saegusa Shrine!

Here's a shrine to the Godzilla-centered psychic Miki Saegusa. Any character that appears in six consecutive Godzilla movies deserves some sort of recognition, hence this shrine.

Miki Saguesa's bio:

Miki first appeared in Godzilla vs Biolante where she was the top student of a psychic research school run by the Japanese government. At first she appears to be a minor, almost eccentric character who's psychic talent seems to be squandered on attempts to communicate with plants. Later in the movie, however, she proves she's a force to be reckoned with when she uses her powers to stop Godzilla from coming ashore. Godzilla just wandered up the coastline a ways and stomped a different part of Japan flat, mind you, but Miki's place in the world of Godzilla had been established.

Someone at Toho decided that they had a good thing going with Miki's character, because she showed up in the next Godzilla movie -Godzilla vs King Ghidorah- as well. This time out Miki was selected to go back in time [via special effects that rivaled Doctor Who] to help prevent Godzilla's creation. Using her psychic powers she correctly identified a gigantic dinosaur that was alive in 1945 as "probably being" a pre-nuked Godzilla. How many other 20th century dinosaurs she had to filter out in order to successfully identify Godzilla is not known.

Miki next displayed her powers in Godzilla vs Mothra. In this movie Miki used her powers to track down the Mothra twins [the cosmos, fairies, or whatever] and discovered that they were being sequestered in a travel case designed for cats.

By the time the next movie came around it no longer felt like Miki was just being shoehorned into the movie. The thing was, as her character began to develop her loyalties began to get a bit shaky. In Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla she's aghast at the idea that G-Force is going to use the stumpy, toad-like Baby Godzilla as bait to lure Godzilla to his doom. Seeing that she's unenthusiastic about the mission, the commanders of G-Force nevertheless assign Miki to be one of the crew in MechaGodzilla as it goes after Godzilla. Combining her powers with the technology in SuperMechaGodzilla, she locates Godzilla's secondary brain and destroys it. In spite of getting killed, Godzilla quickly recovers and wins out. By way of an apology for killing Godzilla a few minutes eariler, Miki uses her powers to convince Baby Godzilla to leave Japan with his enourmous adopted father.

In Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla displays even more aspects of her powers as she uses telekinetic powers as well as the mental powers she's used in previous films. In the course of the film she uses telekinesis to dislodge a radio receiver from Godzilla's neck as well as to levitate a bed she was strapped down to... don't ask. This was also the only movie that her powers physically manifested themselves through the cheesy effect of having her Mothra-style earrings flip about. Speaking of Mothra, Miki also gets to chat with a tiny psychic manifestation of Mothra/the Cosmos. Considering how dull the human characters were in this particular movie, talking to a translucent moth is probably the only way she could have an intelligent conversation.

Miki's final appearance is in Godzilla vs Destroyer. Echoing the sense of finality that permeates the film, Miki feels that her powers might be waning. In spite of this and her disgust at previous attempts to use Junior Godzilla as bait, G-Force orders her to team up with a rather snippy psychic to lure Junior towards Destroyer so Godzilla will follow. After all the carnage is over, a tearful Miki declares that her job is over. This was before anyone noticed that Junior had absorbed the radiation released from his old man and had mutated into a new Godzilla, so the declaration of her retirement may of been a bit premature.

Miki's Stats:

If you want a full biography on Megumi Odaka, the woman who played Miki and who is mugging for the camera in the picture on the right, click here for the bio and filmography of her listed on the Internet Movie Database. Some other fun facts about her: Ms. Odaka is 157 cm [5'1"] tall and weighs 46kgs [110lbs.] This info is only useful if your planning on packing up and mailing Ms. Odaka somewhere and you need to figure out how much the postage is going to cost. Oh, and her blood type is A, just in case you need to give her an emergency transfusion at some point in the future. Can't be too careful.

Note: When I first started this shrine I never thought it would do this well [ten galleries and counting, fanfics, etc.] Thanks to everyone who's helped out or just stopped by to look around. If you happen to have anything you'd like to donate, let me know, I'd really appreciate it.

NOTE: I know I haven't added any new Miki-centric stuff in some time and I apologize for that. Trouble is, I'm running low on material I can add. Don't worry tho', I'll keep searching for anything new and will add it in as soon as I find it.
