She is tall, pretty, soft spoken and very intelligent. She may not be Miss Universe but she was Vikram Bhatt's world for 14 years and queen of his heart.
Today, she is hurting inside. The man who made those vows and appreciated her for standing by him through difficult times, has dumped her like yesterday's garbage.
Aditi Bhatt has every reason to be angry. With two-year-old daughter Krishna on her lap, her voice quivering every now and then, she tells me that they will settle matters amicably.
Will alimony and monetary gain undo the damage Vikram Bhatt has done to a two-year-old's heart? The husband is openly seen with his girlfriend. His parents supposedly torture his wife within the four walls of a home. But no one raises a voice about adultery or the harassment of a daughter-in-law. The woman in distress is advised not to talk about how her life has been ruined by four people (her in-laws, her husband and the other woman) because it may complicate matters.
Legal implications be damned! Doesn't she have the right to cry out when she is told she is not wanted anymore? Especially when even her mother-in-law is ready to throw an accusation like, "Aditi is very moody and psyched. She never got along with us, you know how it is with families. Aisa to hota hi hai, these actresses run after directors, so what? Aditi has created enough problems with her bad behaviour." With provocation of this kind, is Aditi still expected to remain silent?

Her father is a lawyer, while her grandfather was an IGP during the British rule. With an illustrious family background, Aditi and her parents were warned against her marrying into a film family. But Aditi loved Vikram since their school days at Jamnabai and they married four years ago. There was discord between her and Vikram's parents but the marital bliss was finally destroyed by another woman.
Aditi corrects me, " I am shocked at what Varsha Bhatt is saying. The root cause of my broken marriage is first my mother-in-law and then Sushmita Sen. Vikram's mother is obsessed with money and that would make her stoop to any level. She is so money-minded that if I were eating fruit she'd taunt, 'You're eating lichies worth 100 rupees a kilo'. During the shooting of Fareb she would pack stale food for Vikram so I'd quietly go to Candies, pick up food and go on the sets to feed him.

"Vikram hates his mother. He has grown up in a very questionable environment. His grandfather, Vijay Bhatt, was a very good soul but Varsha (Vikram's mother) bodily threw him out of her flat when he caught her doing something wrong in her husband's absence. I have also caught her, so she had me thrown out of the house. Vikram is the only child but every month, we'd pay Rs.10,000 as rent, to live with his parents. Once, I told Vicky that we had no money so she brought it down to Rs.6000 a month. When Vicky was buying his first car, she forced him to buy it on his father's name. We were like dogs at their mercy. If she bought him (Vicky) clothes, he'd pay her by cheque. I have all the proof. She actually took all my ornaments and wedding gifts, saying she'd sell them and get us money. |

"Whenever Vikram got angry she'd throw a fit and pretend to have a nervous breakdown. She was always popping sleeping pills. Varsha Bhatt is such an interfering person, that during the first month of our marriage she came and slept between us thrice, saying she was lonely and afraid. I asked Vicky to stop her. She has made money out of everybody. I can't take names but she actually gave shelter to various questionable activities. Now she'll probably do it for her son and Sushmita. She threw out her own bhabhi and got her brother another woman, a divorcee. She would get gifts from the other woman. She must be expecting gifts from Sushmita too. I've seen a husband (the son of a very prominent person), touching my mother-in-law's feet, begging her not to encourage his wife and her lover. She'd tell the husband she supported him. But the moment he flew back to London, she'd call his wife over and say she supported her. She has led many couples astray.
"I'm not talking out of hate. The Bhatts are now afraid of me because I know too much. I'm speaking because I have proof. Even after marriage she'd tell me that it didn't matter if Vikram was out of town, I should go out and have fun. She tried to make me like her. Once, my father-in-law, Pravin Bhatt, hid behind the door and told me, 'Don't listen to this woman'. When she appeared he quickly changed the topic and said, 'Has Krishna gone to sleep'? He is a hen pecked husband.
"Can you believe this, Varsha Bhatt would actually stand outside our bedroom to listen to our talk, or peep in. I stuffed the keyhole with paper. One day, I saw her feet under the door and I opened it. Her face changed colour and she ran away. She was always trying to compete with me. If I cut my hair, she'd do the same. She has been educated in a vernacular school and studied only up to the fifth standard. Whereas I am a qualified interior designer from SNDT university. I taught her how to write cheques.
"My in-laws were always nasty to me. Eventually things became unbearable and they threw me out. Praveen Bhatt bodily pushed me out. In fact, they have thrown me out of the house four times, twice along with Vikram, since we had no money to give them. That gave Vikram the courage to come out in the open about his affair with Sushmita, which I was suspicious of, all along. She would tell the relatives that I'm a manglik and unlucky for her son, which is a lie. In fact, earlier, four films of his had flopped. But after our marriage, Fareb was a success. Now I'm not with him and Dastak has flopped. I married him because I loved him. But there is absolutely no love between Vikram and his parents. Varsha does not even care for her own husband. When Pravin Bhatt was sick and had to be hospitalised, she actually got a spot boy to look after him. Varsha Bhatt has two weakness Ð money and immorality. Now her ego is inflated because her son is involved with Miss Universe. That's what she tells everybody. And please, she does not do any pooja, her servants do it for her.
"Initially, Vikram said we would buy another house, so I was busy saving for one. That's why I never accompanied him to any of the outdoor shoots. Then one day, my in-laws just packed me off. They threw out their granddaughter first. When I went back to get my things, Vikram just stood there and watched, as my furniture, clothes and other things were being packed off. I think it was all pre-planned. They are horrible people.
"Varsha Bhatt tells relatives that I am at my parents' house because my cousins have come from Dubai. Then she tells others that it's because my father is not well. She is lying. My father had a heart attack eight years ago but he is hale and hearty. He has just driven back from town and tomorrow again he's driving mummy to town. Varsha does not have the guts to say that she has thrown me out of the house.

"Now that I'm no longer in that house, relatives meet me and say how much they hate her. They ask me not to let her know that they visited me because they are afraid of her bad tongue. She's like a fisher woman when she starts fighting. Vikram capitalised on their throwing me out and has come out in the open with Sushmita. Otherwise, I would've been at home and he could be having a ball. I'm lucky he did this when Krishna is still young. I can help her to get over this complex of having a vagabond father. |
"I've tried enough to get Vikram back. But the day he misbehaved with me, my feelings and emotions were dead. He misbehaved with the same wife who he used to ask to handle his finances. I told him I'd see him in court. Now they say I have mental depression and psychological problems. It's all to save their own faces.
"To justify his affair with Sushmita, Vikram says he never got along with me. The Vikram I married, was a very honest man and never lied. Let me tell you, nobody has done black magic on him, as it is believed. He's a very shrewd and intelligent man with a very focused mind. He is having an affair with Sushmita of his own free will.
"I don't know when Vikram began to like her. Because when they returned from the schedule in Switzerland, he told me that Sushmita was very dirty, that she didn't have regular baths, and that she stinks. He said her make-up man hated doing her make-up. He never took me to the Dastak sets, saying that Mahesh Bhatt may not like it. He would have late nights. He told me that Sushmita asked him to show her our pictures. He'd always carry one in his wallet, I don't know if he still does. Apparently, when she saw my photograph she remarked, 'Your wife looks so beautiful and here I am, Miss Universe, and I don't look so good without make-up'.
"When I first heard the rumours, I asked him about them but he actually swore on our daughter Krishna that he had nothing to do with Sushmita. The same man later confessed that he was in love with her. Now there is no escape for him from God, from justice. He can go to hell for all I care. I can survive without him. Vikram and Sushmita are painting the town red and painting me black in the process. They have the guts to meet our common family friends. I hate them both and his parents. He's never going to be happy with Sushmita. Now I've become a rock. I can die with a clear conscience. In Gujarati we say, 'Tadpi tadpi ne marse'. That's what happens to people who break homes and spoil an innocent child's future. He is so infatuated with Sushmita that he's blind to everything else.
"In his heart of hearts he may regret this but he's stooped so low. He has tasted blood so he can't be straight anymore. If Miss Universe goes, his mother will supply him with other girls. There will be many he will want to have affairs with.
"Before going to the US he came to my parents' house and said, 'Come back'. I replied, 'Why? Has she left you? Is the honeymoon over'? He said, 'Save me, I'm miserable'. I turned my face away and said, 'You asked for it'! He was surprised that I could be so cold. I told him, 'Vikram, the more suffering you give me, the more strength I'll gain. I've become a rock now. After begging me to come back, the same night he flew off to America with her, telling me he was going to Madras. Then he made a friend call me to say, 'Vikram is in Hyderabad'. I was suspicious because a month earlier he had been trying for a US visa, saying he was going location hunting.
"When Vikram returned from the US, he visited us, put his hand on my shoulder and told my mother, 'Don't worry mummy, I'll always support Aditi and Krishna. Wait till I get my own house'. The very next moment he came to my room and dropped the bombshell. He told me, 'I don't like you anymore and I don't want you! I'm in love with Sushmita. We've just spent three weeks in America'. So how dare Sushmita lie at the Press conference that there is no married man in her life? What is she doing with my husband then? Liars!
"When Vikram told me that Sushmita and he were in love, I lost my cool. My parents had never seen me so angry. I told him that he'd have to pay for this. My father told him that now that he had decided he wants Sushmita and not his own wife and daughter, we'd have to go through legal battles, and even that woman (Sushmita) might have to go to court as a witness. I have enough proof about their clandestine affair and I can easily take them to the cleaners. He was very frightened and must have told Sushmita. So she got scared and called a Press conference. I'm sure once the legal proceedings will start, she will drop Vikram. Today, I am speaking the truth, whereas Sushmita has told lies at her conference. Only cowards have to lie. If people are in love, they should have the courage to say so. Ms. Sen is obviously ashamed of what she is doing. If she was a good woman in her proper senses, she'd have slapped him and said, 'Go back to your wife and your two-year-old daughter'. I have preserved all the news items and articles for Krishna, so that she will know the truth about her father and her grandparents.
"My parents, relatives and friends cannot believe that Vikram has done this to Krishna and me. Even now, when he comes here to sort things out, he is so quiet and meek. I wonder if that is his acting ability. I wonder if all those 14 years of friendship, love and marriage were just an act."
In between, she said, "You must think that I am exaggerating because I am hurt."
One knows that in some nook and corner, people like the Bhatts, the Sushmitas and the Vikrams do exist. Sometimes, even worse people. So one believes what Aditi Bhatt is going through. The impressions of which will be imprinted on the mind of two-year-old Krishna Bhatt.
