Venues:

  • Arriba! Arriba! • 1463 3rd Ave • Upper East Side •
(2008) Mexican bar with a $7.95 lunch special, which includes chips & salsa, entree and your drink of choice.

  • Avenue A Sushi • 103 Avenue A • Lower East Side •
(2008) Black painted walls, laquered tables, christmas lights & strange artwork. Comfortable atmostphere. Last time here, I ordered a mess of Japanese appetizers (age tofu, spinach with miso sauce, eggroll-wrapped shrimp) and topped it off with a lychee and blueberry martini.

  • Bartinis • 1 Station Square • Forest Hills, Queens •
(2007) Ice bar with a retro-feel (velvet sofas) and half-priced martinis during happy hour. Fantastic martini menu includes: Currant Affair (Absolut Currant, Chambord & cranberry juice), Chocolate Banana ( Banana Rum, Creme de Cacao, Chocolate Syrup), Hot and Sweet (Cinnamon Schnaaps, Vodka, Midori), Bloody Mary & a green apple martini made with gin instead

  • Beauty Bar • 231 E 14th Street • Union Square •
(2008) Fun, retro dive bar in former beauty salon. Manicures offered. Caffeinated vodka specials include: Prell and Blue Rinse. Somewhat scary bathrooms.

  • Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden • 29-19 24th Ave. • Astoria, Queens •
(2007) Enormous Czech beer garden in northern Astoria. Excellent beers on tap (Franziskanner; Hoegaarten), tasty kielbasas & cheeseburgers, and the fact that it's only a scant few blocks from my house doesn't hurt at all.

  • Cafe Bar • 32-90 36th Avenue • Astoria, Queens •
(2008) Local Greek bar/restaurant/lounge near Kaufman-Astoria studios. Cranberry vodkas, alcoholic coffee beverages and a nifty Greek appetizer platter.

  • Chinatown Ice Cream Factory • 65 Bayard Street • Chinatown •
(2006) Extremely popular Chinatown ice cream place. Flavors include: lychee & blueberry sorbet, almond cookie & green tea ice cream.

  • Cup Diner • 35-01 36th Avenue • Astoria, Queens •
(2007) Brand-new diner right near the Kaufmann-Astoria studios. Enormous space, with comfortable booths and high-scale diner food.

  • Decibel Sake Bar • 240 East 9th Street • Lower East Side •
(2006) Underground sake bar with Japanese beers, appetizers and okonomiyaki. Funky tunnels and decor.

  • Doc Watsons • 1490 2nd Avenue • Upper East Side •
(2008) Irish pub with small Sherlock-holmes themed beer garden out back. Chips with gravy, turkey burgers and $5 pints.

  • Ginger Man • 11 East 36th Street • Midtown •
(2008) An excellent mid-town meeting place for a cold, rainy night. Comfortable sofas, enormous selection of beers and tasty food. Crowded in evenings - come early.

  • Iron Sushi • 355 East 78th Street • Upper East Side •
(2008) Lunchtime special includes miso soup and a bento box including: two dumplings, six pieces of California roll, lettuce with ginger dressing & rice.

  • Joe's Shanghai • 9 Pell Street • Chinatown •
(2007) Crab meat with pork meat steamed buns, scallion pancakes & Shanghai fried flat noodle dishes. The soupy buns haunt my dreams.

  • Monkeytown • 58 N. 3rd Street • Williamsburg, Brooklyn •
(2008) Performance art space/gourmet restaurant. Four screens, futon sofas and low tables. Truly excellent food (artisanal cheese board, chipotle braised short rib, seared sea scallops) and good beers & wine. A delightful experience.

  • Mustang Grill • 1633 2nd Ave • Upper East Side •
(2007) Restaurant and tequila bar with strong, girl-drink margaritas (peach! blue!) and tasty appetizers. Lounge area off to the side with low copper tables and exposed brick.

  • Nancy's Pig Heaven • 1540 Second Avenue • Upper East Side •
(2007) Upscale Chinese restaurant with incredibly delicious shrimp with black bean sauce and flaky scallion pancakes.

  • Phoenix Park • 206 East 67 Street • Upper East Side •
(2008) Unpretentious Irish pub with excellent Buffalo wings and orange Blue Moon beer. Try to avoid the Hunter College crowd.

  • Tatiana • 3152 Brighton Beach Avenue • Brighton Beach, Brooklyn •
(2007) Banquet-style Russian restaurant on the ocean in Brighton Beach. Live music, dancing and goldfish swimming underneath the floor. Incredible food, including: potatoes with mushrooms, hachapuri, beef stew, filet pomadora, baby ribs, herring with onions and olives, lox, smoked sturgeon, roast chicken, marinated vegetables, greek salad, duck with apples, egglant caviar, feta cheese & chicken and pork shishkabob. Much vodka consumed throughout course of evening.

  • Vermicelli • 1492 Second Avenue • Upper East Side •
(2008) Several varieties of Vietnamese bento boxes, as well as two variations of banh mi sandwiches: chicken or beef.

  • Zocalo • 174 East 82nd Street • Upper East Side •
(2008) Tequila bar and restaurant on the Upper East side. Half-priced drinks on Monday until 7:00 p.m. The blended margaritas are tasty, but the silver coin and shadow margaritas are absolutely superb. Excellent, expensive food.
