Gone With the Wind was released in December 1939
Clark Gable originally turned down the script, and Vivien Leigh was selected to play "Scarlett" until the very beginning of 1939
Leslie Howard also originally turned down the script, however Vivien Leigh came to Hollywood for two reasons, in which she retrieved both. To meet her lover, Laurence Olivier, and to get the part of Scarlett O'Hara.
Olivia deHavilland has often been overshadowed by her younger sister, Joan Fontaine; however, not for this role. It was hers, and always will be
Clark Gable declined because he thought the part would be too similar to his other roles (Such as: It Happened One Night w/Claudette Colbert). Leslie Howard declined because he thought the role made him seem to feminine, and weak. My opinion: he's a good actor, but he was right!
Cammie King (Bonnie) wasn't originally slated to play Bonnie, her sister was; but it took so long to find a "Scarlett," that shooting was delayed and by the time her sister was up for the role, she had gotten to big. So, Cammie took over. Cammie is now, Cammie King Colon and still alive; her only other film was as the voice of Faline in Bambi
Margaret Mitchell wrote Gone With the Wind while she was sick for a period covering four years; and hadn't thought of selling it until a person from a publishing company came to town and someone mentioned it. He bought it, and originally printed 10,000 copies. It sold mucho mucho fast, and became one of the best-selling books of all time. Not bad, eh?
