The first entry into service of the SOVEREIGN-class Explorer was 2409, after several years work on a ship to counter-measure the threat of the Borg and Dominion.

The test bed, the USS SOVEREIGN, was put into service patrolling the Romulan Neutral Zone. Later, the USS ROANOKE was completed by special request from Commodore Datun Yanten. The third ship launched was the USS ODYSSEY, assigned as flagship to Admiral Lenz's 'Tiger' Battlegroup.

ADDITIONAL NOTES REGARDING SOVEREIGN CLASS

The first entry into service of the SOVEREIGN-class Heavy Science Vessel was 2409, after several years work on a ship to counter-measure the threat of the Borg and Dominion.

The SOVEREIGN-class Explorer uses Bio Neural Gel Packs as a substitute to old Isolinear technology - this improves computer response time and processing power considerably. As on most vessels currently in service, there are two Computer cores installed on the SOVEREIGN-class Explorer - a main and a backup.

New advancements in Warp Drive technology allow the SOVEREIGN-class vessel to skim the boarder line of warp ten without actually crossing it - an event that would prove hazardous to the crew. The ship can maintain high warp velocities with very little reduction in efficiency between warp 7 - 9.9975. Power consumption has been greatly reduced too, allowing more power to shields and other vital systems whilst the ship is travelling at warp speeds.

Although well equiped to serve as a science vessel (the ship is designated as an Explorer, Type II), the SOVEREIGN was primarily designed as a countermeasure to the Borg threat in the late 24th Century - the project was continued as tension mounted between the Cardassians and Klingons, with the Borg and Dominion still in the background. To this end the SOVEREIGN-class are equiped with the latest in Phaser and Torpedo technology. The Phasers are significantly more powerful than those currently in use, they are Type XII, with an output of 7.2megawatts. The ship is fitted with 8 phaser banks, covering all firing arcs.

The most significant development implemented for the SOVEREIGN-class are Quantum torpedos. These weapons were a result of the recent 'ANIALATOR' project, approved by Commodore Datun Yanten. The new torpedos are based on existing matter/antimatter technology (as are Photon torpedos), but are much more powerful. The ship has 3 launchers, 2 foreward and 1 aft. Each is capable of launching a spread of 12 torpedos - although from any combination of tubes, 12 is the maximum number of torpedos available for launch at a given time. The SOVEREIGN-class starship carries 200 torpedo casings.
