I remember watching Yankee games with my grandfather when I was just a little kid. My favorite player of current times is Don Mattingly. I was so upset when he retired on my birthday, August 31, 1997. For many years, he defined Yankee baseball. I just started watching baseball again after about an 8 year absence. It was hard to watch after the strike. I went to a Mets-Yankees game July 4, 2004. Talk about a fun time!! Yanks lost 6-5 and they were swept by the Mets but it was still a great game. It was just so exciting that it made me enjoy baseball again.
My favorite old time player is Lou Gehrig. He defined baseball by playing in 2,130 consecutive games. I know the record has since been broken, but in my opinion, the record still belongs to Lou Gehrig. He played with broken bones and he also played all the way up to the end of his life. That's dedication.
I've been to the National Baseball Hall of Fame 3 times, which is what my uncle refers to as the Yankees Hall of Fame. It is full of Yankees memorabilia from Babe Ruth to Joe Dimaggio to Reggie Jackson. If there are Yankee fans out there, I highly recommend at least one trip to the Hall of Fame. It is worth the admission price. I am lucky, considering I only live about an hour away from the Hall of Fame.
I went to see my first Yankee game in 1994, right before the strike. My uncle and aunt treated me to a Yankees-Red Sox game at Fenway Park (they are Red Sox fans, and they call themselves New Yorkers, hah!). Jimmy Key pitched the game and the Yankees won 5-1. I thought for sure I was going to get attacked in Fenway Park because I wore my Yankee cap. I did get to see some of my favorite players, like Jim Abbott, Paul O'Neill, Jimmy Key, Bernie Williams and, of course, Don Mattingly.
I finally went to a game at Yankee Stadium in August 2001. I took my 12 year old niece with me to the game. The Yankees were playing the Anaheim Angels. I plan on adding photos soon of my trip, once I get them uploaded. The Yankees won, of course. Roger Clemens pitched that day. Since then, I've been to 3 more games, and they've lost every game. I'm starting to think I'm cursed.
