Episode 6 - Repentance - Martin Benedict
Stone goes to a tailor to get his coat fixed.  It has mostly gunshot wounds and coffee stains.  In the diner, a bum is getting kicked out.  He goes to sleep on a bridge, but wakes when he hears screams.  He sees Martin Benedict bent over a body with the eyes cut out.  When he approaches, Martin jumps off the bridge.
Stone talks to Maxine (Lori Petty) in the lobby about a Reggie Bar.  She tells him about the internet and the book she wrote.
Stone walks down the street and is asked for spare change.  He offers his 27 cents, and is grabbed by the person, who of course is The Devil.  The Devil directs him to a nearby bridge.
The bum is telling what happened to the police, but they don’t believe him.  Stone offers to listen, and Harry tells him about it.  Under the bridge, Harry finds a toy like his daughter used to have, and Stone finds a button
Martin is listening to singing in German.  He posts a newspaper article on his bulletin board with the headline ‘Killer Claims 4th Homeless Victim’.
Stone visits a homeless shelter.  Toby Cole is one of the volunteer doctors.  Rachel, the director, tells him about the Angel of Mercy stories that the homeless are telling.  They started a few months ago.  The stories say he has super-human powers.  Someone like that, she says, would be a godsend.
In an abandoned building, a homeless man sleeps.  He knocks over his fire and it spreads out of control.  Martin Benedict appears and guides the man away from fire.  Outside, he is stabbed and killed.
Stone talks to Toby about the Angel.  Toby says the people need someone like that around, if he does exist.
At Jimmy G’s World of War, Stone has the button examined.  It is from World War 2, from someone in the Dutch SS.  Jimmy G show him slides about the Dutch SS and Stone spots one for Martin Benedict, Angel of Mercy.  In 1941, Martin spread the word that he could get visas to Dutch Jews.  But he lost his nerve and turned them in.  18 men and women went to the camps.
Toby is under a bridge, getting ready to shoot up.  Stone walks up.  Stone offers to let him go if he tells him about the Angel.
Stone in an alley.  He finds another button.  Inside a building, we hear the German singing again.  Martin Benedict sits behind a desk, eating a pear.  Stone throws his button at him and tells him he is going back to hell.  Martin asks to finish his pear, and asks how he found him.  Stone says he followed the trail of bodies.  Martin jumps through the wall to escape.  As they fight, he insists he has hurt no one, that he has repented and come back to heal.
Their fight takes them out the window, several stories above the street.  When they fall, Stone gets caught in barbed wire on a fence and hangs there.  Martin picks up his gun, but doesn’t shoot.  Instead he walks away.

Stone is at Martin’s desk, looking over the book of poetry and listening to the music.  The Devil comes in, singing ‘Falling in Love Again’ in German, and reminds him that they have a contract.  Stone points out that he heard lots of guys saying how sorry they were, but it never stopped him from doing his job.
In the lobby, Maxine has writers block and asks Stone to tell her a story.  He tells her his story as fiction  She picks holes in the plot, suggests the cop is from heaven.  Or there is a bunch of cops, ‘The God Squad’.
Stone gets Harry into a shelter.
Stone meets Father Horn at a bar.  He asks about the guy who shot and blinded him, if he could get redemption.  He tells him about Benedict.  Stone can’t understand why Benedict would kill homeless people, but not him when he had the chance.
Stone goes back to the homeless shelter, but Harry has left.  Stone goes looking for him, and finds another victim.  This time the eyes were not cut out.
Rachel lets him back into the shelter to see the medical records of the victims.  The last one had cataracts, but not the others.  The examining doctor’s initials are on all the victims’ files: T. C., Toby Cole.  Stone asks where he is, and Rachel says he is at his other job, that he works at an organ bank.
Toby finds Harry in an alley, offers to help him find somewhere warm.  He puts Harry into his van, when Stone shows up.  Stone shoots out his tires as he tries to escape.  The van crashes, and when Stone gets there, the driver seat is empty.  Someone comes up behind him, and Stone turns to see Martin Benedict.  He shows Stone where Toby went.
Toby is holding Harry hostage.  Stone realizes Toby has been selling eyes so he can pay for his habit.  Benedict jumps down from behind Toby and sends him flying.  He then checks Harry and tells Stone that he will be all right. Stone raises his gun now and points is at Martin.  Stone knows the truth now.  Martin is needed here, and Stone can’t shoot.  He tells Martin to go, but Martin can’t go either.  He recognizes the day of reckoning is here for him, and convinces Stone to send him back.

Erect no gravestone to his memory.
Just let a rose blossom each year for his sake.
For it is Orpheus, wherever he has passed,
through this or that, we do not need to look.

Back in the shelter, Stone visits Harry.  Harry doesn’t know what he saw that night, but hasn’t had a drink since.  Stone gives him the phone number for his wife and daughter.
In the lobby, Maxine gives him a present from Jimmy G, a Reggie Bar.  The Devil is waiting for him in the elevator.  He is upset because Stone doesn’t feel guilty about sending Martin back.  Stone doesn’t care, he has his Reggie Bar.  ‘Go to Hell’, he tells the Devil, and walks away smiling.
