Sprains and Strains are injuries to the soft tissue of the legs. Overexertion stretches and sometimes tears tendons, ligaments and/or muscles and limits movement. The result is swelling and pain. During the first day after the injury, keep cold packs on the area for 10-15 mintues every 2 hours. Putting crushed ice in a double plastic zip-locked bag and then wrapping it in a towel works as well as any purchased chemical pack. After the first 24 hours, change the to moist heat. Wrap the leg in warm, damp towels for 15 minutes every 2 hours. Rest is essential. A crate-trained pet should be kept in the crate for longer periods of time. Confine other pets to a small area. If there is no improvement after 2 days, call your vet. |
