Constipation
To relieve mild constipation, give your pet a mixture of equal parts Milk of Magnesia and mineral oil. The following amounts should be used: for dogs, one teaspoon of each per 5 pound of weight, but no more than 8 teaspoons of each; for cats, 1/2 teaspoon of each per 5 pounds.
You shouldn't need to use this treatment often. If constipation is common ailment for your pet, give itmore milk with its food few times a week. Brewer's yeast is another dietary additive that can help prevent constipation. If you find it necessary to use a laxative, keep it on a short-term basis becouse laxatives are very habit-forming.
Urinary difficulties can give the pet's owner the impression that the pet is constipated. Be certain that the straining to eliminate is the result of infrequent or difficult bowel movements.
Never give your pet an enema unless instucted by your vet. if the Milk of Magnesia & mineral oil treatment does not work, call your vet.
