The Solitary Walker
My name is Homero Bermúdez Castellanos.

I am Cuban, 61 years old, married, I have five children and I live in Los Arabos, Matanzas province, Cuba.

Currently I am an electrical engineer, but in the past I was civil aviation pilot. Due to my passion for walking I acquired the nickname of "
The Solitary Walker" ("El Caminante Solitario", in spanish).

It all began with a promise I made more than 20 years ago. In the late eighties, my father, condemned by an incurable illness, asked me to fullfill a dream he had always held but never accomplished: to undertake a journey to travel by foot the whole length of the island of Cuba, and after that Galicia, the place where my grandfather Bermúdez had been born. With this promise, I walked the length of Cuba in 1981 and 1982 from west to east, and vice-versa (3433 Kms), and in 1997 I walked Galicia (640 Kms), Spain.

In 1999 I walked the length of Portugal, from Lagos to Valença do Minho (740 Kms), and the portuguese way to Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia, Spain (865 Kms). In December 2000 I walked the Don Quijote route, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain (400 Kms).

I have recently finished walking all Portugal, from Saint Antonio Villa Real to Bragança (630 Kms).

My family and many friends have contributed to this dream and to them I give thanks. With their support and encouragement I am planning further walking challenges, both in Cuba and other places around the world. When I walk not only do I satisfy my dreams but I am also able to share my culture, taking my people with everywhere.
