Breeding Your Pet
To Breed or Not to Breed!
The decision to breed one's pet should not be taken lightly. Why? Because for one, there are thousands of animals in shelters in need of a loving home, and above all else, breeding is something that takes time, money, and education on you, the owner's part. Without time, you will not be able to properly commit to the responsibilities breeding takes. Without money, you will not be able to pay for veterinary expenses, baby food, immunizations, etc...etc...etc... These expenditures alone can add up to several hundred dollars. And finally, without education on your part, you are bringing helpless lives into the world selfishly for no other reason than "it would be neat." So please, before you breed Fido to Fluffy or Thumper to Bunni, do your homework to know what you're getting yourself into! Breeding animals responsibly can be a very rewarding experience when done with care and consideration for the animals' wellbeing.
Please review the following websites. When it comes to breeding, you can
never learn enough. And remember, just because you may have a rabbit, guinea pig, or cockatiel, that doesn't make it "ok" to breed hap-hazardly. These animals are also in abundance in our country and unfortunately, many of these are euthanized before even being given the chance to find a new home.
Do your research and only breed if you have a purpose. If you want to breed seeing-eye dogs, check into your local seeing-eye dog training facility. If you would like to breed rabbits for show, join the
ARBA. While you may think that your Poodle-Chihuahua mix is the best dog in the world, there are thousands of other people who feel the same way about their dogs. And this is precisely the reason why the United States has such a problem with pet overpopulation. Again, breed with a purpose other than flooding the pet market -- there are quite enough pets in need of homes as it is.
