Cranky, bloated, restless, head-achy, depressed, fatigued, mood swings, impatient, crying, confused, socially withdrawn, nervousness, irritability, hostility, difficulty in concentration, insomnia, bloating, swelling,  nausea, stressed, excitable, hot flashes, night sweats, heart palpitations, constipation, weight gain, acne, craving for sweets, craving for sours, craving for EVERYTHING, exhaustion, breast swelling (very different from ENLARGING unfortunately.)  Do any, or maybe all of these, sound familiar??  Well, if they do, you are one of the 8 out of 10 women who suffer from premenstrual syndrome, or PMS.  There are actually more than 150 symptoms reported in association with PMS.  WOW!

Pre-menstrual symptoms certainly were around when Eve was walking this earth, but it wasn't until 1931 that it was medically recognized.  Figures, huh?  No offense men, but, well, it's just not fair.

There are actually 5 basic categories associated with PMS:

ANXIETY
DEPRESSION
PAIN
WATER RETENTION
HYPOGLYCEMIA

Diet can make a big difference in how you feel during your cycle.  The Arnot Ogden Medical Center suggestions trying these suggestions for a week or two before your period:

Eliminate: sugar (including honey, syrup, and "-ose" additives like fructose or sucrose), caffeine (in coffee, chocolate, and cola drinks), artificial sweeteners, cigarettes, and alcohol.
Emphasize: Whole grains (breads, pasta, brown rice), dried beans, nuts, fresh vegetables (especially spinach), and fruit.
Avoid: Salty and smoked foods, dairy products.  If bloating is a problem, limit fruit and eliminate fruit juices.

Ok, they have just taken away everything that I like. Although, I am sure this is VERY SOUND advice......this is not fun.  After taking a class in Herbs at the Virtual University, I started myself on some "herbal" remedies.  I have noticed a 90% change (improvement) in my health in general, and a "world" of difference in my PMS.  In sharing these with you, please keep in mind that I am only an amateur and therefore, am only telling you how I have gained in taking these herbs.  Please study for yourself on what you want to take and how much.  Each person is an individual.

Kava Kava is a muscle relaxant, diuretic, relieves pain, including headaches and muscle aches.  It steadies the pulse, lowers body temperature and counteracts obesity.  Kava is slightly stimulating, relieves great fatigue, sharpens mental faculties, promotes sociability.

Valerian Root has been used for thousands of years as a folk remedy.  It has calming effects.  It relieves restlessness, nervousness, insomnia.  It also has an agent for "nervous" stomach.

Ginger Root has been the subject of intense research for many years.  It has proven to be amazing effective in treatment of numerous types of nausea.  It eases indigestion, is a remedy for diarrhea and vomiting.  Ginger also contains moderate amounts of protein, calcium, iron and potassium.

Red Raspberry leaf has an affinity for the female reproductive system.  It aids in bring balance into the menstrual cycle and will help alleviate excessive bleeding.  The actual fruit is rich in nutrients and iron.

There are actually alot more herbs that will help.  And you may notice that I have concentrated more on "relaxant" type herbs than anything else.  I have found that if I can "get rid" of the "mental????" types of problems associated with the dreaded PMS that many of the physical "problems" seem to either go away, or I don't notice them as much.

Thank you for allowing me to share my experience with natural remedies for PMS.  I hope that this will bring relief to just one other person who has suffered from this.
