~ The Easter Bunny ~

I have tried to research the beginnings of the concept of the Easter Bunny but to no avail. The trail leads to a dead-end. It is just one of those things that everybody does but has no idea why they do it. It is tradition they say... I would guess it is a carefully orchestrated commercial venture that is sustained by the chocolate industry.

So what's with this Easter Bunny thing anyway ? I know it's tradition and it has been the main theme and icon of many Easter activities for as long as I can remember... but why a white rabbit ? Why not a groundhog or a squirrel or bird ? On top of that, why do they always hide eggs ? Rabbits don't have any evolutionary connection to eggs (according to my biology teacher) so why do these rabbits have anything to do with eggs ? Who are they stealing these eggs from anyway ? I always thought rabbits liked carrots and celery. I could understand the whole concept if they were trying to hide food they like to eat, but Easter eggs ?

Well, I have had many young children tell me it all goes back to Peter Rabbit. They say he was the one who was always taking things from Old MacDonald's farm so it makes sense that maybe eggs were something he did take and that is how the whole thing started. I think Peter Rabbit was just hungry and couldn't find any food on his own so he had to find a way to get some food until the flowers and grass started to grow in the fields around his home. I am sure that Peter Rabbit knew all the hens in the barn and asked them if he could have some eggs. I guess he was scared that other rabbits would steal his food that the hens worked so hard to make for Peter, that he hid all the eggs in secret places that only he knew. Days later he could go back to his secret places and have something to eat. Maybe that's why we now have chocolate Easter eggs and a bunny that hides them...

Bunny research aside, another interesting thing about Easter is that young girls wear pretty new frilly spring dresses and women wear new hats. This is one of those times of the year when people go to church to show off new fashions. Not that this is a bad thing, it is just another one of those traditions. I like the idea of Easter traditions (especially the bunny thing). It brings out the best in people and it is a time for family to be together.

One of the things I remember best about Easter are all those long lost relatives that show up on Easter Sunday. They are usually the same ones that showed up at Christmas but sometimes it's other relatives that show up on top of the regulars. For some reason, reunions at Easter are larger and more fun. It must have something to do with the change in the weather and the fact that it is an easier time of year to travel. It may also have something to do with the fact that everyone in the house is pumped up and wired from eating so much chocolate. You can't help but have fun. No wonder the parents (I mean the Easter Bunny) have to hide all those chocolate treats ! You need the 3-day weekend just to recover from the sugar rush. It is nice to have all those people together again. I must admit it is one of life's little pleasures to sit at a dining room table full of people alive with laughter and the unmistakable smell of ham coming from the kitchen.

I must admit I am still confused about the origins of the Easter Bunny. Maybe it's just one of those things that will always be a mystery (but the chocolate eggs are a really neat idea !)
