It's A Jungle Out There

This is more a personal philosophy and belief than true fact. My opinion on this is based on what I have experienced for whatever it is worth. I believe there is an intrinsic "law and order" in everything we do. There is a reason for it and a timing by which it is carried out that is predestined. We can only manipulate some of the time variables that allow us to feel "in control". Just for your own curiosity, find a good dictionary and read the definition of "predestination". It may be somewhat enlightening. It is what makes us an integrated animal of the ecosystem that we call home (the earth for now). It is governed by a divine force that is far more powerful than you could ever imagine. You should "know" this force because it is capable of killing you instantly or slowly. It has given you your "life" (whatever you perceive it to be).

Everyone talks about "Mother Nature" as being so wonderful and how everything seems to be so beautiful and breath taking. Well, she also has an incredible nasty side that causes killer whales to rip apart and destroy herds of young seals, or Bengal tigers to ravage and dismember innocent zebras. Even knowing that, these are beautiful animals and we marvel at them in aquariums and zoos around the world. We have learned to accept the role of the prey and the predator and enjoy their company. We really think we are immune to the danger. How stupid and naive we humans really are! The only thing stopping that animal from getting to you, is a cage (or an enclosed pool) and its lack of desire or need to kill you. There is not a human person alive on this planet that would last more than 10 minutes with a hungry Bengal tiger or a mountain cougar in an open environment (without any weapons). You have now become its prey and you will lose your life. It does happen once in awhile. It isn't pretty and it is tragic, but that's "life".

The only reasons humans have been successful as a species is from our ability to think and to fabricate. We can make weapons to protect us from predatory animals. We can fabricate shelters to shield us from the elements of climate and weather. We can think and communicate in groups to educate and to learn by process not necessarily by experience. We are unique but we are still part of the overall law and order of this planet. We have the power to make it better and we also have the power to totally destroy it.

Law and order in the animal kingdom is decided by the food chain. The strongest animals will survive the longest. The weaker, older animals will die by predation (eventually) and their bodies will be cleaned up by the scavengers of the food chain. Nature has a very clean and orderly way of taking care of things, all in its own time and place. Endangered species could be our fault, but I don't think we are entirely to blame. Mother Nature may have a good reason for "killing off" a species, that just can't survive. Maybe the species in question just doesn't "fit" any longer. There were many species of large animals that became extinct long before humans were around and there will be many many more animal species that will die while we are around. We may one day become one of those extinct species ourselves if we're not real careful. Probability says we will be extinct or removed from this planet sooner or later. It is to be. The over-population saturation will one day reach critical mass and Mother Nature will "recoil". We are already the most populous of species (excluding insects) and occupy and consume the most bio-mass of the entire planet. How long do you think we can continue growing like this without some reactionary whiplash and "changes" by Mother Nature ?

The only reason why we have continued to be successful as humans for the roughly 3,000 years we have been civilized, is because we have imposed "law and order" on ourselves. We have helped ensure our own longevity as a species, by mimicking a form of natural law and order that we can and have to "live" with. I promise you, I won't go into any detail. Suffice it to say, we have our own laws and ways of dealing with people that don't conform. I hope it is enough over the long haul.

Everything we do has some sort of "law and order" to it. Think about car traffic on busy roads or the aisles of a grocery store or the alignment of high-rise office towers and houses in a city. This was not by accident folks. Even if it was an accident, we have a way of cleaning up after ourselves and learning from it. Law and order returns us back to "normal" when things go wrong. Even the most severe earthquakes and hurricanes that have ravaged the environment and killed thousands of people have been dealt with and learned from. We have survived even the worst (so far). So, what can we do as individuals to help the process ?

Well, I have a problem with people who are trying to instil good values of religion and then go off to fight a "holy" war. I have a problem with people developing technologies that kill people. I have a problem with people who want to save convicts from cruel and unusual imprisonment while ignoring the thousands of innocent victims who have been severely scarred at the hands of criminals. I think we have to get back to the basics of individual survival and get our priorities straight. Survival of the wisest, I say.

I believe that simplicity is the answer. The simpler your life, the easier you will "blend-in" and be in harmony with nature and the life-cycle of the ecosystem. The more in harmony you are, the stronger your sense of survival and the longer you will live. Things don't have to be complicated... we make them that way.

Food doesn't have to be exotic or preserved with thousands of chemicals or synthesized through artificial means. We choose it to be that way for the pleasure and greed of variety. Cars are very destructive and intrusive to the natural environment, but we have chosen to travel and to become more "mobile" as a species. These are not bad things.... not at all. These are just things that we as humans have decided are good for us and essential. It is a matter of personal priorities and preferences. Simple is better (and a lot easier to do). Try to evaluate things in your life that could be made simpler. Live within your means and to your own personal morals (law and order), which may be a combination of natural laws and human laws. If something is not broken, don't try and fix it. If something feels real good, do it again until it doesn't feel good. If you enjoy the finer things in life, be prepared to pay more than just money. Do everything in moderation and nothing to extreme. Love yourself as much as you love the people around you and give everyone the space to do as they please. Try to be part of the solution to something, not part of the problem. Treat everything and everyone with respect. Treasure your life and embrace it. There is "law and order" to everything. Seek out the rules, learn them, then follow them, and you will live a long and happy life.

Pure and simple...
