RALLY REPORT-Lion Foundation Lighthouse Tavern Rally of the North
ROUND FOUR-Winger Subaru Top Half Rally Series.

Saturday 2nd August 2003

I was extremely fortunate (again) to have finished my fourth rally this year.
These roads up north were new to me, I hadn’t ever driven the stages and unusually the roads had seen a fair bit of water prior to and during the event.

Stage One was a wide flowing open road where we tied with Grant Liston and Chris Woudenberg.

Stage Two was a long stage and it offered a few more challenges than I was ready for. The tyres we normally use just didn’t work for us and I had made two major mistakes on this stage, luckily I was let off gently. We rearranged the back bumper on a ditch and drove it out again, all under the watchful eye of Damon Templeman spectating on the bank. I wasn’t too happy after this stage and I felt I was in for a rude shock.

On the next short stage we changed to some 15” tyres, what a difference they made! We used them for the rest of the day and at Lunchtime we were 14th overall.  Just over a minute behind Grant Liston and 4 secs behind Chris Woudenberg.

Stage Six after lunch was a ripper, nice cambers, tight in places a few tricky bits and a bridge after a downhill left that came up a bit closer than I’d hoped, luckily no damage!

Stage seven , cancelled due to the incident in which Marty Roestenberg left the road over a series of  uphill hairpins and landed in a paddock sadly hurting himself badly enough to be taken to hospital with Navigator  Greg Harnett.

Stage 8 was fast in places but a nice flowing road.

9 + 10 were cancelled due to road closure times due to the accident on SS 7

In hindsight the morning stages of the rally were tricky, it took me longer than expected to dial in to the car. The afternoon stages on the other hand were brilliant and were made for rallying. I hope the historic places trust looks at preserving these roads as icons of our natural heritage, hey it’s worth a go !

So we finished 11th Overall/ 2nd in class, 2nd 2WD . We now have 70 points in the 1600cc class with an 18pt. lead over Myles McElwain in the GT Corolla.

Thanks must go too Chris Woudenberg and Grant Liston for the competition and the words of encouragement at Prize giving.
Kayne Barrie (KBM Motorsport) for his huge assistance prior to the event, without Kayne’s help we would not have even started !
Clive Partington for taking time off work to help me get the car ready
Dave Strong and Strong for Honda for their assistance with a new engine
Steve Burley for Dyna Tuning the engine.
Pete Antwiss and Jamie Fowler for servicing us

Last but by no means least I’d like to thank Rob Scott for navigating. If you think Rob writes a good story, wait till he reads one to you,

Rob has agreed to Navigate again at Whakatane, If I have to attribute my performance to anything it would be the people listed above and Rob’s notes, thanks guys,  I’ll see you at Whakatane.
