Caring for ferrets is a little complicated. They need just as much, if not more, than a cat or dog needs. Here are a few pointers and absolute necessities for ferrets:

1. Food and water. Ferrets eat and drink all the time, so a constant supply of food and water is very important. They don't eat like a dog and need to have food available to them 24-7

2. Caging. Ferrets need a lot of room to stretch, play, sleep, and eat. A big cage (although sometimes expensive) should be purchased so that your ferret(s) can play while you're gone in a safe environment.

3. Bathing. Ferrets need to be given a bath about once every 2-3 weeks. Ferret shampoo is available in most pet stores. It's also important to get ferret ear cleaner and make sure to clean their ears at least once a week. This will prevent itching and ear mites. Going along with grooming still, it's important to clip their nails pretty regularly too. Just regular fingernail clippers work well and you'll have to learn to scruff your ferret pretty well before doing this.

4. One is good, two is better, three is great! Although ferrets don't get depressed like other animals do when they're alone, it's nice to have a playmate for your fuzzy. They keep eachother company while you're gone during the day and they're so fun to watch when you get home.

5. Ferret-proof your house or the room the ferrets will be in. This is one of the toughest parts. You need to make sure there's nothing dangerous your fuzzy can get into, including heater vents, electrical sockets, holes in the wall or foundation of your house, and cupboards that have toxic chemicals inside. Ferrets are a member of the weasel family, which means they are really sneaky!
