RAILFANNING IN CUMBERLAND

ACTION AT VIADUCT JUNCTION - At the Cumberland station, a 6-unit set was just pulling out to toward the Narrows.  We stopped at Viaduct Junction and as luck would have it, the train headed west toward Grafton.  There was a relatively clean GE unit in the front, a weathered GE behind it, an EMD, and then...
UGLY SLUG - the fourth unit was a sorry looking GP35 slug which I believe was mated to a shiny GP40 number 5421.  Makes you wonder how much worse it will get before CSX gives it a paint job.
This is one of my favorite railcars, a short covered hopper painted in yellow Chessie System colors.  The paint is fading now, but the car is still faithfully serving the railroad.
OUT TO PASTURE - A few miles north of Cumberland, at Hyndman, PA, this observation car sits in a meadow a few hundred feet from the main line.
