When England took in 1842 possession of Hongkong ,a lang term of humiliation and discrimination began for the original residents of the so-called barren rock : it's the usual result when European Governments are laying their hands on foreign countries.The land nearby the Pearlriver delta was given to England in an attempt of the Chinese emperor to keep the uncivilized white as far away as possible from the Chinese court, after their misbehaving and violation during trade missions.
In those days Chinese people where in Europe considered as savages without any education and one preferred to ignore the many inventions that had come from China to Europe ( China was already since the fourteenth century superior in culture and knowledge: many inventions like ink, paper, the art of printing, stirrups , firework and gunpowder) where done by the Chinese.) In Beijing the Europeans got acquainted with the oldest and highest culture of the world and it was quite a shock for them to realize they where the barbarians ,hold on a far as possible distance and Hongkong was for more then 150 years a great way for Europe for earning money and to oppress the population.
Although it's also true that the British established the city Hongkong ,one of the most beautiful cities in the world the price Hongkong's population had to pay was sometimes (too) high ,but in the 21st century Hongkong,under the inspiring guidance of mr.Tung Chee Hwa, shall have together with mainland China, it's leading cultural and economic role in the world.
