The Greek family life
The Greek society is a very traditional one in many ways. Family is very important and cultivating strong bonds between family members is not a social obligation but a chance to spend time with beloved ones. The Greeks are famous for their unstoppable desire for fun, for enjoying life in its fullest and family gatherings are seen more as big parties rather than boring obligations. This is something that definitely makes life easier for the Greeks since the typical Greek family numbers tenths of people. It is not uncommon for many Greeks not to have meet all of their relatives in their lifetime.
In Greece young adults are expected to live with their parents for many years until they get married or... they cannot stand it anymore! Family bonds are very strong and relatives, close or not so close, are expected to provide in any way they can to other family members in need. The support of the family is not only material but psychological as well. One can cound on his parents for money at difficult times but he or she will always find a listening ear or a comforting hug when needed as well. As a matter of fact "supporting the family" is a serious business for the Greeks who consider an offence to one member as an offence to all of the family. Greeks may get angry with relatives or they might talk bad about them at times but they won't accept not even the slightest offensive comment on behalf of third parties.
The Greek everyday life is organised in such a way to reflect this... "family networking". Each year has lots of holidays which traditionaly are spend with the family usually with a big feast. The most typical one is the Easter which is considered to be the most important religious holiday for the Greeks, more important than Christmas. The Greeks say "spend the Christmas with whom you like and Easter with the family". And of course with a big feast with lots of food. Meat preferably!
