US Silver Coinage

Seated Liberty Silver Coins

Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Seated Liberty designs replaced the Bust dime in 1837, the Bust quarter in 1837 and the Bust half dollar in 1839

"Barber" Design Silver Coinage

When the US Treasury Department decided in 1891 that it was time for a new coin design, a public competition was held and hundreds of possible designs were submitted by artist vying for the prize money. Charles Barber, the official engraver for the US Mint, was one of the three judges and convinced the others that none of the submitted designs were worthy of the prize. As a result, the Mint Director asked Barber to come up with his own design which was probably what Barber wanted all along.

Morgan Silver Dollars

Designed by George T. Morgan, a former pupil of Wyon in the Royal Mint in London. Weight = 412.5 grains and fineness of .900 silver. These dollars were minted continuously from 1878 until 1904 at mints in Philadephia, New Orleans, Carson City, and San Fransico. Morgan silver dollars were also struck in 1921 and were then replaced by the Peace Design
