SIMLER FAMILY TREE

The true origins of the surname SIMLER are still not determined. The SIMLER family line appears to traces its ancestral roots to Slav and Magyar origin and the family held lands and estates in Austria, where the family emerged as a notable family early in the Middle Ages between the 11th and 12th centuries. The SIMLER family also allied itself with other influential families of the region [1].

The surname has several spelling variations including Simmeri, Simmel, Simmell, Simmill, Simill, Simell, and Simmler. The family has been suggested to have Jewish origins. The SIMLER family in Malta is alleged to have originated from Austria when Giuseppe SIMLER settled in Malta [2]. Of interest is the niche with Our  Lady of Mount Carmel  in Valletta which had been sponsored by A. Simler and his spouse in 1925.

The SIMLER coat-of-arms can trace its roots back to ancient times where it was carried onto the battlefield. The components of the coat-of-arms have been described as a shield of black and gold with two baskets counter-changed. The crest is made up of five ostrich feathers [3]. The coat-of-arms in use in Malta is made up of a shield of red and blue with a warthog on green grass in the blue section and two thistles in the red sector [4].
