Progress Report 2000

Hearing
James is now 7 & and has now taken more responsibility for his hearing aids.  It's his job now to make sure that they are put in the proper place at night & to make sure that he puts them on in the morning. Of course he doesn't follow through on either of those tasks 100% of the time! This May will mark four years since his hearing loss was diagnosed!  In December 1999 we had his semi-annual hearing test, and once again everything has remained unchanged since his diagnosis in May of 1996.

Speech
We have not visited Bolesta Center for Auditory Verbal Therapy since November 1998 when his language skills tested at or above age level against hearing peers!  He has been attending speech therapy at the district public school since January 1998.  In December 1999 I met with his speech therapist to review his progress. James had met all of his IEP goals for the year! Now he has a new IEP and new goals to work toward in his articulation. He has come a long way since the days when I had to translate for him! Now if translation is needed it's because he simply talks TOOOOOO fast! It's a family trait! LOL

School
In August 1999 we began our second year of homeschooling. If you read last year's progress report you'll remember that we were trekking 45 min. into the city twice a week to meet with a homechool co-op. This year we're still meeting with a group, but we've been blessed with the opportunity to help start a satellite of New Covenant Christian Academy. We still have the guidance & leadership of the larger school without the drive! Our group meets about 10 minutes from our home on Fridays for enrichment studies! On the other days studies include Bible, Phonics, Spelling, Math, History, and Science. I still subscribe to The Deaf Homeschool Newsletter e-mail list, but no longer receive the hard copy newsletter. I found that it didn't have much information for kids who didn't use sign as their first form of communication.  If you interested in either of these please e-mail me & I'll do what I can to help you contact the proper people
