The Facts of Teen Suicide

-Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among teens in the United States
-Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among college students in the United States
-Suicide is the fastest growing killer of youth in America
-Most suicides occur in the home, and most between 3pm to midnight
-95% of teen suicides are preventable
-In an average class of thirty students, four will attempt suicide
-Two out of three high school students think about suicide before graduation
-Sixteen teens commit suicide every day

-Over half of teen suicide victims had substance abuse problems
-Four times as many males complete suicide than females
-Most males use violent means, such as guns, hanging, etc. Most females use less violent means, such as drug overdoses.

-Almost all suicide victims have at least one mental or substance abuse disorder, and over half have more than one disorder.
-There are 30 to 50 times as many attempted suicides as completed suicides.
