This page is dedicated to my two brothers,

IVAN and DELTON TATE, who have carried on the Tate name honorably and proudly. Both of whom I love so very much.

~ Prologue & Acknowledgement ~

I have been told that the Tates originated in Scotland, and due to the percecution and execution of so many over their religious beliefs , they fled to Ireland, England, Canada, Australia and the U.S. pursuing freedom and safety;

I have traced the Tate's back to whom, I think was the the first Tate of our linage to have been born in the U.S. I dont know this for certain because I have yet to find the Tate that migrated from Scotland, Ireland, or England; However I have been able to trace the Tates back to 1773, and that will have to do for now.

There are several ways to spell Tate, Tait, Taight, Tayt, Tayth, and many other varietions; Back-a long time ago, a name was descriptive of the person, his home, village or occupation. So names were changed to fit the need; Nevertheless we spell our name T-A-T-E, as did our ancestors;(most of them, there is always an odd-ball or two in every family).

I have never began anything as hard as searching out the ancestors, but thanks to my computer, friends and family, and many wonderful people out on 'the net', I have done a fair job, and I have had so much fun, doing it. I must not take too much credit though, because I never could have got started without the help and wonderful memory of my precious mother, INEZ CHADWICK TATE SANFEDELE, who was my only source, and inspiration in the beginning;

Once started, my dear cousin MARGIE ELLA TATE of Henrietta, Texas, supplied me with most of the materials, and information of the ancient Tate's.

Others to whom I am eternally grateful for thier help and friendship, the 'tons' of informative material,and research they did for me, are; KEN & ANN GOSS of Calhoun Georgia, who 'dug up' alot of Tate history ,like marriage and cemetary records, and much more;

TAUNJUA & ROBERT CLARK, from Arizona, for all the information on John Jr. and his family;

LUAN ALANIZ in New Mexico,for all the information on the children of John Sr. and Abraham, but especially for filling in the gaps on our mutual grt. grt. Grandfather Evan Calaway Tate ,of whom she is a descendent of his son Theodore, and I am the descendent of his son James Bunyun.

To MARILYN HOUSER, of La Fayette, Georgia, for all the wonderful hours of reading all the obituaries,newspaper reports ,and the census of our ancestors she sent me, via e-mail.Some of it very funny.But especially for all the information on Isaac Tate,of whom I diden't know existed.

To AUSTIN STEPHENS, of Georgia, for all the information on the Grady Tate linage (Benjamin Franklin Tate); and for discovering a new 'cousin'..Thanks Austin;

To all the relatives that bothered to answer my letters of inquirey when most did not, and IVAN & RUTH TATE of Orland,Ca. DELTON & KATHIE TATE,of Mariposa,CA.(My brothers and wives.)My sister FAY and husband JERRY DAVIS of Los Banos ,California, and last, but far from least, my youngest son, TROY DAVIS for his fantastic gift of my computer. Without this wonderful instrument, this record of history certainly would never have been done before my death,(if at all.)-by me.

This could never have been done without all your help and support; I THANK YOU and LOVE you dearly. God bless you ALL.. Wynell Tate Davis-June 1,1999

NOTE: Instead of the usual way of copying down documents, with numbers and letters, and skipping around, which confuses me to no end, and skipping back and forth between the generations , I have started and finished with one generation before going on to the next;To simplify , and make it easier to follow, look to the right of the persons name (It will always be CAPITALIZED.) The first name, listed in paraphrasis, is the father or mother of the capitalized person.The next name will be this persons parent, and so on, with each name in paraphrasis, being their parent. The only thing bad about this is that you will find some of John SR's children listed father down on the pages, because some of the others have such large families. To alleviate this, and make it easier to research I have sectioned portions of this history off, onto other pages. See icons;

Family is the 'heart' of our lives, and the 'life' of our hearts.

ABRAHAM TATE

.(John1).born-Oct.14,1806,* _________County, So. Carolina.-died-Jul.15,1883 in Sonoraville, Gordan County, Georgia. He married ,ELENOR CAROLINE CANNON, called 'NELLIE', abt-1830, probably in S.Carolina. Nellie was born, Feb.6,1812, in S. Carolina-?..died- Dec.12,1893 in Sonoraville, Gordan County, Georgia; (Both are buried in Tate's Cememtary in Sonoraville);

Abe owned much land and slaves in So. Carolina, but in the early 1830's ,he sold out everything and along with his parents and family , moved to Georgia. They settled in Gordan County; In 1839, Abe purchased quite a sum of land in Georgia, and by 1850 had amassed alot more. There are said to be many towns in Georgia and Texas , named 'Tate City', because most of the land in those areas was owned by the Tate's. Of all the towns I have come across, Sonoraville, deserves the name,'Tate City'. Abe and Nellie are known to have twelve children;

JAMES BUNYON TATE

:(Evan C./Abraham/John-1):.b-Apr.22/1857, in Gordan County, Georgia. d-Mar.21,1889. He is buried in Tate's Springs Texas. He married, JOHANNA VINSON, Aug.31,1879, in Tarrant County Texas. Johanna was born in 1860,in Georgia. d- in 1897, and is buried in Tate's Springs Texas. They met on a wagon train, coming from Georgia to Texas in 1870. (He was 13, she was 10, on the wagon train trip. They married 9 yrs. later. He was 22, she was 19:) Johanna was the daughter of William Vinson and Martha Penn; Martha was a direct descendent of famous Quaker, WILLIAM PENN. Martha Penn's brother Capt. John Penn was the Wagon Master of the wagon train they traveled with from Georgia to Tarrant County Texas, in 1870; William Vinson and Martha Penn Vinson were also on the wagon train; James died young,(32), leaving Johanna with four children to care for. Evidently he left her destitute, for according to Cleveland Leon Tate,(their grandson), he says," They lived in a covered wagon, and the children went from door to door begging, or held menial jobs to support them." Johanna must not have been in good health either, because she died,eight years later at the age of 37; Note; all my life my grandfather Charles, only talked of having one brother.Somewhere along the way there were clues that there was a third son who died early in life; Now I have new information (that isen't legally confirmed yet) that there was a fourth child.A daughter, Elizabeth, aka,'Lizzie'. So I will add this new information here. If you know any more about this please inform me of it.Thank you.

ALEX TATE

(James B./Evan C./Abraham/John-1):..b- abt-1883, in Handley, Texas,Tarrant County; He married________________in__________________They had no children; According to my grandfather Charles Alonzo Tate, his brother Alex was still alive in the 1950's. But I never knew who was the oldest. So the 1883 date could have been 1880, but he spoke of him as a younger brother

CHARLES ALONZO TATE

:(James B./Evan C./Abraham/John-1):b.-Aug.20,1881,in Handley ,Texas-Tarrant County;. d-Apr.27,1961, in Exeter, California, Tulare County. He married, EMMA IDA JOELLA NESBITT,(aka- "ADDIE") Sept.13,1902,in Henrietta, Texas. Emma was born-Oct.1881,in Arkansas ( we think it was Hope,Ark-Hempstead county.-?). "Addie" died young, at the age of 36 years, Mar.1,1918; She died in the famous Spanish Flu Epidemic. The actual death certificate states," pneumonia as the 'cause of death'", but it was the consumation of the Spanish flue,and childbirth, resulting in pneumonia, that killed her. They had six children; After "Addie" died, Charles took the four younger children, age, newborn to 9 years of age, and went to Wichita Falls, Texas, and lived with Addie's sister,Ada, for awhile, leaving the two oldest sons (ages 15 and 12 ) to fend for themselves. Later he came back to Riverland Texas, where they lived during thier entire marriage. He then took the four youngest children and moved to Okla. Leaving the two oldest sons to fend for themselves again. They literally raised themselves. Both became alcaholic's, but the eldest, Cleveland quit drinking when he married. Charles occupation was a 'blacksmith'.Emma Ida Joella was the daughter of Henry Davenport Nesbitt & Elizabeth "Betty" Tolbert, of Riverland Texas, Clay County;

Children of Charles A. Tate & Emma ( Addie) Nesbitt are;

6/.. Beatrice Tate..born,abt-Feb.28-29,1918..died- 1919..at the age of one year.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*****~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NOTE; Since none of the family had heard of Beatrice Tate,( My grandfather Charles spoke of her to me often..and my memory had her as his child) and we discovered that there was another girl in Charles family (old picture), we are thinking that Beatrice, may be the name of Charles unnamed sister, instead of his child. Any information on this will be most appreciated..Wynell
