Because It's Holiday Time

I am going to be a bit general this time around.  I'm going to try to give you some good books for gifts.

For the Men

Author  Dean Koontz writes mysteries that twist and turn.  Very good reading (ladies like these too because they generally have a little romance in them).  These books draw pictures with words.

Leon Uris writes excellent stories of war.  The verbiage is  sophisticated and there are stories within stories in each book.

John Grisham writes of the law.  Each book is very different from the next.  They are fairly light reading.

W.E.B. Griffin writes stories about war and police, among other things.  They are well written and entertaining but a little heavy on the gory stuff and the romance from the point of a man.

For the Ladies

Maise Mosco writes stories of family.  One book leads into another in one series but she has also written a few separate novels.  They are light reading.

Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neil-Gear do novels with historical background.  They do most of their books together but each have written separately.  These books are based on archeological information about American Indians.  The stories are about families, tribes and their neighbors.

Catherine Coulter writes mysteries for the lady.  They have lots of realistic life situations woven through the mystery.

Judith Krantz.  Do you like romance, challenges of women in the work place and women with lots of money?  These are the books for you.  These are easy reading but somehow you just don't want to put them down.

For the Kids

Children of today need a challenge to keep them interested in reading.  Be sure you get books that suit the age range and the development of your child.  Many times it is a good idea to get books that you already know they might have interest in.  If the child likes baseball, don't try to get them to read Little Women.  The books listed here will be books that are good for parents to read to the child sometimes.  Reading together is an excellent way for a parent and a child to have rest time together.

Any of the original Winnie the Pooh books are excellent reading.  Besides being just plain fun, there is often a little moral in the story.

There is a little book of poetry by Stevenson that is wonderful.  "How Would You Like to Up in a Swing" is my favorite poem even after all these years.

Laura Ingalls Wilder has written the Little House on the Prairie series.  Sometimes the boys liked the TV series but the books are really written for young girls.

Please try to stay away from books that have been written after Disney movies have been made.  Get your kids the video and allow them to watch them now and then.  Somehow the animation gets lost in the written word.
