The Mummies--Death By Unga Bunga!!
Estrus   2004

My how times change. With all the anti-digital propaganda on their vinyl-only record sleeves over the years, the thought of a Mummies CD seems strange. Well, it's really here and great, as you'd expect. On Death By Unga Bunga, which is ultimately a collection of tracks from the band's out of print vinyl singles, the Mummies prove the more things change the more they stay the same--this music still obliterates everything else of its ilk which came before or since.

If you aren't already familiar with the
Mummies, suffice to say, you've been missing out in about as big a way as one could. The Mummies play the absolute sickest, rawest take on hybridized 60's garage and punk you'll ever hear. One listen to Death By Unga Bunga and every band you've ever heard treading similar ground will instantly drop three or four notches in terms of quality, regardless of how much you've loved them in the past. This music is snide and unfriendly but not in the way so many feign being--the Mummies are the real deal. These tunes sound like they were recorded with the band set up on top of a log in the commode and it's great--sounding just on the verge of being completely swallowed up by reverb. To unknowing ears, this CD will especially be a revelation.

As previously stated,
Death By Unga Bunga is more or less a compilation of tracks from various Mummies 7"ers. As such, virtually every Mummies song you need is contained on this disc. Everyone has their favorites but, in all honesty, every one of these tracks are all-time classics--from "I'm Gonna Kill My Baby Tonight," to "Food, Sickles & Girls," "Doin' The Kirk," and on and on. Still, be advised to keep an ear peeled for "(You Must Fight To Live) On The Planet Of The Apes"--this track should be life changing/affirming for practically everyone who listens to it. Watch that choreographed head banging nod if you're listening to this particular one in the car--it's beyond infectuous, just like the rest of 'em, but maybe even more so.

If you haven't had a record player to consume vinyl releases all these many years, now there's no excuse for not pledging your allegiance to the
Mummies. Death By Unga Bunga will also be a must for diehards who are missing one or two of those 7" slabs, because you can never be too complete when it comes to this stuff. At the very least, this CD just reaffirms the fact the Mummies are the coolest jerks that ever lived. There's a 99.9% chance you suck if you don't love this disc. So, get the CD or get the hell out of their world.
