Murderdolls--Beyond The Valley of the Murderdolls
Roadrunner   2002

Apparently, the old adage of "you can't judge a book by its cover" applies to CDs, as well. This is especially true of the Murderdolls. A sticker on front of this CD's jewel case reveals the band features members of nu metallers Slipknot and Static X. Then, there's the band photo on back, with the guys looking very Marilyn Manson-esque. Taking all of this in, my initial thought was "I will probably hate this CD more than I've ever hated a CD before in my life." Well, thank God for my open-minded ears, at least--I couldn't have been more wrong. Without them, I would've missed out on one of the funnest, rockingest albums in awhile, Beyond The Valley of the Murderdolls.

The best way to describe the
Murderdolls sound would be to say they're like D*Generation if Dukey Flyswatter from Haunted Garage was writing the lyrics. A more masses-friendly take would be to say they're like a cross between Guns 'N' Roses and Rob Zombie. What you've got on Beyond The Valley of the Murderdolls is high-octane rock with campy, horror-themed lyrics. Surprisingly, the production quality is just right--it's relatively clean but hasn't had the grit glossed over to the point there's no semblance of balls.

The songs all basically stay along the same lines, but that's okay--everything rocks throughout without feeling tedious. The sameness of this material doesn't hurt the album much because the songwriting
is so strong. Granted, the Murderdolls lyrical campiness is nowhere as brilliant as the Cramps, but it's fun and doesn't really suck, either. Songs like "Dead In Hollywood" or "Dawn Of The Dead" are sure to get the old adrenaline pumping. In fact, there isn't a single stinker in the entire batch of tunes which comprise Beyond The Valley of the Murderdolls.

Needless to say, the
Murderdolls must be considered one of the most pleasant musical surprises of 2002. Not a stitch of nu metal to be traced on it at all, Beyond The Valley of the Murderdolls rocks, period. Fun, fun, fun, till you Daddy takes your enbalming fluid away.
