Anyone living, born after 1932, I do not list birth dates so as to protect them; these I keep on seperate files. This is my husband's family line. Altho I have extended family lines, I separate out my husband's male line as to give his family history. The numbers in front of the name depict generation, John J. being 1.

According to Nellie Smith-Brackney (John, Robert, Viola) memoirs, John J. Houtzer came to America after taking part in a student rebellion toward an Emporer's edict in Germany. This rebellion was lost, the students went into hiding while trying to leave the country. To leave the country one must have a ppassport-type document with the emporor's seal; which these students would not be able to get. Somehow they found the seal and John, being a potter by trade, copied the seal and forged sailing papers for them. Evidently this was discovered at the time the students boarded the ship and the ship had set sail. Authorities chased the ship out of the harbor, but this sailing ship had larger sails making it faster. The ships Captain was told of thir dilemma and he chose to support them and sailed as fast as he could. The authorities were not following them the next morning.
According to an 1885 Bibliography on Valentine H. Houtzer: John J. Houtzer and his first wife (name unknown) were born in Hannover, Germany, came to America in 1835, settled in Berlin Twp. Shelby Co. and had no children and he works as a potter. In 1838 John files Intent for Naturalization in Darke Co. ( I have the court doc.) Berlin twp. will later be renamed McLean. We don't know when this first wife dies, but John remarries to Marcuria Kern (their son, Robert, will list them both as foreign born in 1870 census). In 1840 census in McLean Twp., Shelby Co., OH there is a John Hootzer; a couple between 20-30, 1 boy <5, 1 boy 5-10 and 1 girl <5 which doesn't match up to ages to children we list. The biography states that in 1845 John moved to Allen Co., but is not found here or in Shelby Co. in the 1850 census. It also states that Marcuria died 1846 in Allen Co. and he remarries in 1847 in Allen Co. according to marriage records. John was an elder at German Evangelical Reformed Lutheran Church, founded Septmeber 5, 1863, HISTORY OF ALLEN COUNTY, OHIO - 1885 p. 495: "German Evangelical Reformed Lutheran Church was founded Septmeber 5, 1863 by Rev. George Retting, Karl Amelung and J.J. Houtzer were elected elders" (in 1880 this church name is changed to M.E. church). With his second wife, Marcuria KERN, John J. had these children and grandchildren: Valentine (c. May, Melissa, Wm, Mary, Emma, John, Ida, name unknown), John C. (c. unnamed, Caroline, Sarah & Lydia), Robert (c. Charles, Franklin, Elgeen and Elzina). After Marcuria dies, John J. remarries to Sarah Emaline HAGEDORN 8-12-1847 and has one child, George, and are found in the 1860 census. After John dies Sarah marries Geo. MORT in 1871 in Allen Co. It has been said that John married a Mrs. Evaline DAY-HAWTHORNE, but I haven't found proof of that yet and think it's a misspelling of Sarah's name. John's 3 boy's have moved from home in Lima by 1860 census at ages 16, 19 & 20 (John and Robert in Jackson, Shelby Co., OH, Valentine in Lima); his real estate is valued at $300 and personal values are $25. John will die of congestion of the lungs in the wee hours of the morning.

We seek information on Valentines children: Melissa and May who lived in Van Wert, Co.

___2.Valentine Henry Houtzer / Adaline "Adele" BOHRER, (f. John Bohrer, mo Elizabeth GRABER, both of Switzerland, her f. Samuel Graber ((1778-1850), mo. Magdalena ?)), m. 9-14-1861 by A.R. Krebs of M.E. Church in Allen Co.
Adaline's surname is listed in marriage book (1831-1869) as Boher. From her Grandparents Graber's probate records her fathers' surname was Bohrer. In 1880 census she lists both her parents born in Germany. Graber family history states that Samuel and Magdelena immigrated from Switzerland (leaving dau., mary Graber-Brugger there) appros. 1834 to Wayne Co., OH then to Holmes Co., OH and had 11 children; most whom lived in Wayne Co. in 1860. Mary E. Graber-Bohrer would have 11 children with John (listed in Allen Co. Probate records) and 2 listed are Adele and Elizabeth Houtzer (John C. below) and a Jacob which spells Bohrer as Bohyer.

Valentine & Adaline had 8 children, 2 die between 1865-1869; 7 we have listed, Melissa, May, Wm, Mary, Emma, John, Ida. By 1860 Valentine has left home and lives with B.H. Reynolds family, a potter, in Lima. In 1870 census he is still in Lima, working as a potter with real estate value of $800, listing that both his parents were foreign born. His brother, Robert, is living next door. He is a potter in Lima until 1870 then insurance sales starting 1873. In 1880, pg 529, census they live at 131 Wayne St, Ottowa /Lima, OH (Allen Co), 1890 census burned, but according to his brother, John, civil war affidavite he witnessed, Valentine lived in Van Wert, OH in 1892-97. The newspaper article listing John C. Houtzer's death say Valentine lived "off Harrison St". In 1900 their family has moved to 319 Spencer St. , Pleasant (Perry Co.) / Van Wert, OH.

___2.Robert Houtzer / Adaline "Ada or Addie" E. CURTIS; (she & parents are US born) m. 12-5-1869 by A.R. Krebs in Allen Co.; my husband's GGGrandfather. In 1860 census, pg 405, Robert is living with brother, John C., with Edminston Family as a farm laborer. Surname is written as Howtzer. 1870 cenus lists him married, working as a bricklayer, living next door to Valentine, but with Cornelius ROUSH family in Ottowa/Lima; real estate valued at $800. 1880 I haven't found them, Nellie Smith-Brackney memories states they moved to Pine St. in 1885 and 1890 census burned. They had 5 children; 3 lived, Charles, Franklin and Viola. By 1900, age 56, he and wife are living with son, Charles at 544 Pine St in Lima. Robert's son, Charles, dies in 1903 and wife, Ada, dies by 1909 which must cause his move next door with son, Franklin, at 542 Pine because he is found there in 1910 census at age 67.

In 1900 Charles parents, Robert/Addie, are living with his family in the house he built at 544 S. Pine in Lima and his occupation is listed as a handle sawyer.
