For years it has been assumed that John Howell of Middle Island, New York was the grandson of Richard Howell of Southold. However, DNA tests have now proven otherwise. This creates a third Howell family in eastern Suffolk county - Edward Howell of Southampton, Richard of Southold and now John of Middle Island, none of whom are related.

This discovery turns upside down, years of well intentioned efforts from many people working hard to find genealogical answers. Perhaps knowing these facts will lead us to more answers.

The purpose of this web page is to serve as a tool in researching the origins of this John Howell.

A fair amount of information is known about John. That information will be placed on this page in the coming days and weeks.

Listed under the "Y results" tab are three descendents of John Howell of Middle Island. All three are from the posterity of Edmund Wheeler Howell who migrated west in 1850.
