Chapter 16
"Fucking asshole!"Simone yelled into emptiness as she hurled the crystal vase full of red roses across the room.  The vase shattered into a million tiny pieces as it hit the far wall.  He played me like a frickin' instrument once again.  The flowers, the champagne, candlelight.  He was even tender as we made love.
Am I that fucking naive?  Did I really believe he would change?  I must have been a fool to think he loved me and then there was Marie.  Who the fuck was Marie?  What the hell happened while she was on her book tour?   The restrained flow of tears now fell freely from her shimmering glow that they had for nearly two weeks was gone.  Gone because her heart was confused.   Lost to a mass of emotions that ranged on the brink of near insanity if you asked her right now.  Was she living the storyline to the book she wrote?  Did she live the storyline she wrote?  Now that was just plain crazy.  Nobody could be that much in love, could they?  She made her way into the kitchen and grabbed of the twisted stem wine glasses from the overhead rack.   She flung open the refrigerator door to find her favorite bottle of chardonnay chilling near the back on the top shelf.  She pulled it from it's place and turned back to the counter.  Was she so much in love with Kevin that she couldn't tell left from right these days, that what Alex was doing was nothing more than what she expected  and received from Kevin himself?   Did any of that even make sense to her?  And what was she doing drinking at two in the afternoon anyway?  Alcohol wasn't gonna solve any of her problems.  She  had a need to know that Kevin was alright but she couldn't know at this moment.  She left the filled glass and half empty bottle setting on the counter and stepped out onto the deck off the kitchen.  The warm afternoon breeze blew her billowing curls.  Why couldn't she just fall in love like everyone else in the world?  What made her so sure she wasn't falling in love like everybody else in the world?  Why?  Because as she had told him that he wasn't the stereotypical male that swept you off your feet and left you once he got what he wanted out of it.  He was the guy that women of all types dream of having in their lives.
"Simone,"Kelly's voice interrupted her thoughts.
"Sorry."
"Are you okay?"
"What are you talking about?"
"There's a vase full of roses busted against our living room wall.  Are you alright?"
"How do you expect me to be?  I don't have AJ and I'll be surprised if Kevin even bothers with  me anymore."
"Don't you get it Simone?  Kevin loves you, Alex doesn't."
"It hurts just the same Kel.  I did love Alex at one time and he did love me at one time too."
"You think being beaten on a constant basis is love Simone?  He's a  no good son of a bitch that lives by the brain between his legs.  He doesn't care about what goes on in here."  She placed a hand over Simone's heart."Not yours anyway."
Simone brushed her hand away."So who is she anyway?"
"I didn't stick around long enough to find out who she was.    Does it really matter?"
"I don't know Kel.   When I shook her hand, I felt a connection there.   I don't know if she did but I did.  She was there to replace me then.   She's replacing me now.  My book is echoing my life Kel."
"That's crazy Simone."
"Maybe so but I don't know what to believe anymore Kel."
"Believe in the phone ringing woman,"she aimed  her fingers simultaneously inward toward the noise.
Simone rushed through the door and picked it up before the machine caught it.
"Hello?"
"Hi,"Kevin returned.
"Aren't you at the studio?"
"I'm outside the studio.  Your boy Alex is safely tucked away inside."
"He's not my boy."
"You came here to see him today didn't you?"
"I was brought under false pretenses.  Couldn't you get caught?"
"I asked first."
"I came to see him yes.  I thought we'd patched things up.  I didn't know about her."
"So I'm nothing to you?"
"Kevin  it's not that easy."
"It is Simone.  I love you. There should be no questions about that.  If you do, then I haven't given you all I've got."
"It's not that."
"Then explain it to me.   I need to know where our relationship stands."
"Timing is everything with Alex.  You of all people should know that."
"I do but after the way I saw him treat you today, I wanted to do major bodily harm to him.  He doesn't deserve your love and compassion."
"And you do?"
"I understand you Simone.  I have  a part of you he'll never know."
"And what's that?"
"Your heart."
