RE: Larry Stuppy
My parents were long time friends with the Manns and my father
saved Mr. Mann's life when he had his
heart attack in the early 60's. I knew Joel Mann and on one
ocassion had to transport he and his
surf board from the airport to the Mann house; it would not fit
into the Mann 'cadilac'. Her
son, Joel, and her husband, Murice, died within a year of each
other. Joel had a daughter but, to
my knowledge, was never close to her or his ex-wife.
I new Kathy Taylor and I went to school with both John and Eric
Toberman while at Black Foxe
School. I flew for the Air Force on active duty from 1968 through
1972 and then flew for the Air
Force Reserves from 1972 through 1980.
I left, 'on a jet plane,' from Viet Nam on February 29, 1972.
While at a bon voyage party for
a relative in April of 1972, I saw Mrs. Mann. She looked tired
and worn down. I agreed to
help her at the school with the understanding that I would go
with the airlines if hired. I
was hired as a pilot for Western Air Lines in December 1972 and I
am currently a captain for Delta
Air Lines.
Mrs. Mann made me a "director" and later a counsellor
and principal from 1972 through August of
1984. I left the school because Mrs. Mann relatives were
interferring with the operations of the
school. Mrs. Mann was too far "gone" and forgetfull;
she could not control her relatives and I
was not allowed to make improvements. The last 4 or 5 years
resulted in restrictions on the
number of hours the school building could be used due to new
earth quake laws. The school could
only be used 4 hours a day, which was the same restriction for
churches that were not earth quake
proof.
Tuition was about $300 a school year in 1972 and climbed to
$1,200 by 1984/5. Remember that $32
registration fee?
Briefly, the Manns purchased the school around 1944.
