Trump number 5, The Pope. Created 10/2003 for Lotus Tarot Collaborative Tarot Deck by Happy Hardy

Self-discipline may open new channels of creative expression, but relying on what we can discover alone, in a single lifetime, can limit what flows through those channels. There are those ahead of us who have learned the wisdom of the ages. The lesson of this Tarot Pope is that what cannot be acquired alone in one lifetime must be handed down as a body of accumulated wisdom from one generation to the next.

The Pope sits in his private chambers. Arranged behind him are a hundred Books of Knowledge. In his right hand are depictions of four of his predecessors; in his left hand is his Rod of Office. His alb and chasuble are Kashmir wool; the alb deep indigo, the chasuble worked in an ancient paisley pattern, symbolic of the Pythagorean comma and the investiture of magic into music. His stole is symbolic of his wealth of knowledge in its colour and knotted fringe.

The golden tortoise design is symbolic of the union of male and female, not in androgyny, but rather is alliance, harmony, and equality. The Pope's neckpiece symbolized another union, the union of body, mind, and self in a state predisposed to enlightenment.

Before the Pope is his seering table. Reflected in its depths we see the Chalice of emotional stability, the sharp Sword of intellectual curiosity, the many-branched Rod of action, and the Coin of physicality. A nugget of copal resin smolders in a censer that reflects the astrological association of this Pope: Taurus. The censer is supported by a troika of bull's heads, their horns blending to become the rim that supports the domed top. The dome of the censer is representational of the cosmic dome, the incense rising from the pierced top of the dome represents the power of thought concentrated in the eye of the dome and ascending into the World. The incense itself is symbolic of rising above the phenomenal World, the temporal, and emerging in the totality of the moment.Concepts and keywords for this Pope: Erudition, Learning, Admissions, Mastery, Cultivator of the mind, Instruction, Proficiency, Testing
