King of Pentacles. Created 03/2004 for Lotus Tarot Collaborative Tarot Project: The Court Cards by Happy Hardy

This King has his finger on the pulse of the Earth: he knows every inch of his kingdom and the potential of each of those inches. His detailed attention to the material and physical world are symbolic of accomplishment and manifestation.

His energy and dedication are the force that is stimulating and fertilizing leading to the fulfillment of the basic necessities of life.

His hat, his crown. shelters him from the elements, and is indicative of his accomplishments associated with those same elements. His blue denim raiment connects him with both the required diligence and hard work of the Caretaker

of the Earth and with the very real sense of spiritual nourishment and mastery that comes with being the Caretaker.

In his right hand he holds his sceptre: the branding iron that delineates his kingdom and declares his sovereignty. In his left hand he holds a symbol of his kingdom: a bowl created from clay dug from the foothills that border his lands, and the chili and pinto beans grown within the garden he wrested from the hardpan and rocks that are the landmarks that distinguish his country.

At his feet are other vessels and containers created from the bounty of his lands: baskets woven from the fibers of the agave, the desert willow, the palo verde, and the mesquite. Clay vessels to hold the produce of his lands, and the flowers carefully tended for their fragrance and shapes.

His throne is hewn from the hardwood of the canyon oak, the red-ochre used to stain the throne comes from the deposits found high in the canyons to the West. The turquoise in his bolo tie, the jewel of his lands, the silver the quest of antiquity.

Flanking him are masks that associate this Earthy King with the astrological sign of Taurus. The Keywords are: deliberate, stable, patient, productive, steadfast, stubborn, and affectionate as well as sensuous, self-indulgent, and grasping.

The sign of Taurus governs the neck, throat, vocal cords, and the thyroid. It has been said that the adage 'slow and steady wins the race' was coined to describe the Taurean approach to life. The secret of the successful Bull is to learn and earn enough flexibility that stability does not become stagnation.
