I've gotten some fairly inexpensive furniture at Cort Furniture Rental on North Beacon street in Brighton (or maybe it's Allston). They sell used furniture that has previously been rented. Usually around a year or two old. The stuff is not dirt cheap, but seems to be a good deal because the quality is generally pretty good even thought it is not new stuff.

They have a pretty good variety of stuff. Between me and my roommates we have bought 2 bedroom sets (bureau, night table and mirror), a desk, and a coffee table. I didn't look at couches and loveseats, but I know they had some. And, I'm pretty sure they will deliver.

You might try Putnam Furniture on Mass. Ave. in Central Square. They don't sell used, but the prices appear to be reasonable and I'm fairly sure they deliver.

There's another place in Central Square (the name evades me) across the street from Putnam and just about next to Pearl Art and Crafts. They too appear to have decent prices.

There is a GREAT used furniture on the corner of Putnam Ave. and Pearl (just outside of Central Square) called the Organic Furniture Cellar. Only catch is it's closed until Labor Day. But when he reopens, it's REALLY worth looking into. He's only open on Saturdays from Labor Day to Memorial Day. Presumably, he spends the summer restocking his inventory with semiantique pieces.

There is a place in Malden, at the corner of what they call Main St. and Rt. 60, called UFO (Used Furniture Outlet). They offer delivery. Have everything from microwaves to full scale bedroom and living room sets. Yes, they have the usual junk you'd expect but they get some wonderful period sets plus a lot of hotel sofas and loveseats. I've bought several hundred dollars worth of stuff. (They even have furniture from the 50's, the real stuff, not the imitation like you see in Sozios or Jordans Furniture).

If you call information for #, he's listed under his complete name, not the abbreviation. 3/00 ***You might try Cabot House Furniture on Mall Road in Burlington (just past the mall on the left). We shopped around for months before settling on a leather sectional at Cabot House. The service and prices were good.

***There are a large number of stores all clustered together in Framingham/Natick that carry furniture and other household needs. My favorite is Jordans, which has good prices on standard furniture. There are three or four other furniture stores and the typical mall stores.

***For furniture I like Jordans Furniture (they had some nice leather sets) or Pottery Barn and for drapery/curtains we went to JC Penny Home Store exit 36 off RT.3 in Nashua N.H. near Home Depot., they had a fairly big selection and great prices/great sales (plus no sales tax).

***We found a really good value (not cheap or overpriced) in a leather sectional at Comfort Furniture Warehouse in Lawrence. International Home in Westborough is also good for a midrange, modernoriented store (if they're still there), as is Boston Interiors in Brookline (the latter doesn't have a lot in leather).

***Jordan's Furniture in Waltham is very reliable for furniture and mattresses.

***Furniture at Jordans Buy only the brands that have lifetime warranty and get the extra insurance policy. Our neighbors did, and 3 years later when a wine stain wouldn't come out as advertised, Jordan's replaced the entire set for free!

We've had good lucky at mattress discounters, but they're pricey.

***We got both a mattress and a sofa recently at Jordan's (as well as the rest of the bed and a bureau) and were quite satisfiedwith one exception, for which I suppose the blame must be shared. Jordan's did not suggest, and we did not request, premeasurement of our staircase before we ordered the sofa. Consequently when it was delivered it wouldn't fit, and we had to return itand pay 20%. They did come and premeasure for choice #2 (which was hopeless) and then #3 (which they gave a 50% chance of success, but ultimately succeeded brilliantly in wiggling in.) They do have leather.

***Jennifer Leather on VFW Parkway in W. Roxbury (Rte 1) has an immense selection, some of it reasonably priced smaller selection available at their Boylston St. store. If you like funky stuff, I recommend Mohr & McPherson I go to the one on Arlington St., but I believe there's also one in Cambridge. The Cambridge Antiques Cooperative on Msgr. O'Brien Highway is also a big place with lots of stuff

***For furniture, I'd recommend either Comfort Furniture (Lowell) or Donahue's Furniture (Burlington). Both are warehouses that stock/order high quality items at reasonable prices.
