Hugh Cunningham was born in Brandon,Manitoba in 1927 and for 30 years has been sculpting in wood, marble, bronze and gold mirror mosaic. He studied in the Ottawa School of Art for several years sculpting in clay, stone and bronze. He enjoys a wide range of realistic, stylized and abstract designs but concentrates mainly on abstract bronzes and mosaics. By incorporating excellent balance and free-flowing lines, his works are unique in Canada and the USA. He feels that abstract art should not only stimulate the imagination but should create pleasant images in an observer's mind. He often strives to portray abstracts such as motion, light, love, music, ecstasy, serenity and homage or sculpture that suggest people, animals, birds and various things in nature. Some of his abstracts contain an optical illusion such as a "loop floating in air" Hugh Cunningham has shown extensively with numerous one-man shows in Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Florida. His works are displayed in collections of the Export Development Corp., Museum of Nature, Matercraft, Laidlaw and in many private collections in Canada, USA, Mexico, England, Germany and Australia. |
