Wednesday, March 21, 2001 Hugo Frones' creations reflect love of process By REGINA HAGGO Special to The Hamilton Spectator Hugo Frones says he puts some- thing of himself into every paint- ing. His personal visions can be seen in a striking exhibition of 17 acrylic and mixed media works at the Westdale Gallery on Augusta. Frones, who lives in Toronto, has been painting up a storm ever since he came to Canada from his native Uruguay in 1975. He has shown in Toronto and Barcelona, as well as Argentina and Uruguay. His abstracts reflect his love of the painting process, which he sees as a mixture of control and chance. Reflecting Blues is typical of his work in this exhibition. Carefully composed masses of soft-edged mut- ed colours blend into one another near the centre. They look ethereal. As they flow away from the centre, they became more saturated and fin- ish in jagged lines. This missing is balanced by sharp-edged arcs of blue and complemented by spots of white. Linda Mac Rae has schedule a Reception with the artist in attendance this Saturday from 1:30 to 4:30 at 23 Augusta St. The exhibition continues until April 14. |
