Caring for your New Puppy

Food Socialization

The purpose of these exercises is to prevent your pup star from biting someone over food. Pup are naturally protective of their food. Each of these steps should be followed in order. It is better to move slowly then to fast. Each pup is different and takes different amount of time per exercise.
1. To begin, feed the pup in the usual place and time, but put the food dish in your lap. Just sit quietly while pup eats, occasionally speak kindly and gently to the pup.
2. Now bring treats with you when you sit down with the food in your lap.(liver, cheese, or hot dogs are a good choice). Let the pup begin eating, then slowly bring treat toward the bowl. Stop about 6-12 inches from the bowl, if the pup hasn't stopped to investigate, get his attention and give him the treat. Let him start eating again and repeat. Slowly bring the treat closer to the bowl until you are putting the treat in the bowl. Do this for another 3-5 days until the pup is relaxed and.3. Put the pup's bowl on the floor again, and now add the treats from above while the pup is eating. Start from a sitting position in front of the bowl, then crouch, then stand.repeat this until pup is comfortable with this.
4. The next time you feed the pup, give him a couple of treats, then, while you are giving him a treat, slowly pick the bowl up a couple inches off the floor. Gradually increase this until you Are picking up all the way. Take a week for this step.
5. By now your pup associates someone approaching his food as the signal for a positive event about to occur, treats! Feed the pup occasionally from your lap, add treats while pup is eating, and every now and then pick the dish up.
6. If you follow these steps, and reinforce them on an occasional basis, you will have taken steps to make your pup more trustworthy.
