Our first stop at the Pewter factory. The tin, copper and antimony are melted and cast in a mould. After filing, the components are soldered together and then polished. There are 11 workers and the process of making the pewter wares is very labour-intensive. |
The alloys are melted and casted in a mould. |
After casting, the worker trim away the unwanted portion. |
Finally, polishing the final product. |
Carina, our guide, explaining to the students about the origin of pewter and the making of the pewter wares. |
Our next stop was the prawn cracker factory, a cottage industry. We saw how the flour and other ingredients were mixed and then fried. The different flavours were added to the prawn crackers using a machine which looks like a cement mixer. |
On our way to the restaurants, the tour guide also pointed to us the origin of new village in Malaysia from 1948 to 1960. The one which we saw was Skudai. Can U remember what is a new village? We also went past the oil palm plantation and the guide entertained us with many interesting facts about the plantation. |
We had our lunch at the High King restaurant by the sea. Here we could also see the fisherman loading their catch from the sea. |
We took a boat to the fish farm and we saw the snappers, snake fish, king crab and fishes which catch their prey by spitting! Most of the fishes are sold to the restaurants in Kukup or Singapore. They reared the fish from small fry which they bought from Thailand. |

What do you think are the advantages and problems faced by the fish farm (kelong)? |
Our final stop at the 23 acres fruit farm in which we saw the mulberry tree, gooseberry tree, passion fruit tree and many more. We even got to taste the cocoa fruit which was very sweet. After that we went to the 'Giant' to buy some souvenirs. Some of us took the opportunity to try their local food in the food court. From the tour guide: What does woman have in front which the cow has at the back? Why is the black chicken smarter than the white ones? |
Have U seen a dragon fruit plant before? |
