Hunger Prevention & Nutrition Assistance Program

EMERGENCY FOOD AND OPERATIONS SUPPORT ASSISTANCE

From the NYS Department of Health

WHAT IS THE HUNGER PREVENTION AND NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (HPNAP)?

The Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program provides assistance for food, operating costs, food service equipment, food safety and sanitation supplies, and nutrition technical assistance to nonprofit Emergency Feeding Programs (EFPs: soup kitchens, food pantries & emergency shelters) throughout New York State. Seed Grants are also available to provide start-up funds or to support new initiatives that can provide an effective service and have a potential for serving under-served areas.

HOW DO I GET HPNAP ASSISTANCE?

· Applications for assistance are available annually through regional food banks or the United Way of New York City (UWNYC) for food operations support (i.e., operating costs such as staff, utilities, disposables, food transportation, and rent), food service equipment and special project Seed Grants. With the exception of HPNAP funded donated foods, food bank and UWNYC membership is not required to receive HPNAP assistance.

· EFPs that received HPNAP food and/or operations support assistance in the previous year will automatically receive applications and need not contact their regional food bank or the United Way of New York City (UWNYC).

· EFPs that did not receive HPNAP assistance in the previous year must request a food or operations support (for operating costs and food service equipment) or Seed Grant application from a regional food bank or UWNYC.

· Food service equipment can be requested as part of Operations Support applications available from a regional food bank or UWNYC; HPNAP no longer issues separate capital equipment applications.

· Agencies wishing to transfer and/or receive available food service equipment should contact their regional food bank or UWNYC.

· Seed Grant applications for assistance up to $30,000 are available to provide start-up funds or to support new initiatives that can provide an effective service and have potential of serving under-served areas.

WHAT IS THE DEADLINE FOR REQUESTING HPNAP FOOD, OPERATIONS SUPPORT/CAPITAL EQUIPMENT and/or SEED GRANT ASSISTANCE APPLICATIONS?

If you are a foodbank or United Way of New York City member, you will automatically receive an application each year.

Due dates for returning completed applications to a food bank or United Way of New York City will be identified on the applications from these organizations.

If you are a new program or not currently a member of the regional foodbank:
