1ST APPEARANCE: G.I.JOE: ARISE, SERPENTOR, ARISE
BATS is short for (B)attle (A)ndroid (T)rooperS. Cobra has used other robots in the past, but the B A TS were the first type to be mass produced as a form of artifical soldier for use in combat. The B A TS are not very inteligent but they do possess incredible amounts of invunerability. A single B A T can keep going even if it's limbs and/or head have been blown off. B A TS can usually be stopped by a shot directly to the chest or by destroying it till all its components are spread out on the battlefield.
Cobra first used B A TS during an attack on G.I.JOE HEADQUARTERS. The Joes were stunned by the androids' resistance to harm. B AT S were used extensively during DR MINBENDER'S scheme to create SERPENTOR. COBRA COMMANDER tried to order several B A TS to throw SERGEANT SLAUGHTER out a plane in flight. DR MINBENDER overode COBRA COMMANDER'S orders and had them capture him instead. COBRA COMMANDER programmed several B A TS to attack SERPENTOR. They were all destroyed when they walked in the middle of a fight between SERGEANT SLAUGHTER, SERPENTOR, a squad of Joes, and several Tele-Vipers.
A battlion of B A TS were used to defend Cobra's underwater base. They were successful in stopping the first attack by the Joes but were surprised the second time. One B A T did manage to grab SHIPWRECK in the leg. The grip was so tight, LIFELINE had to pry it loose with a saw. One B A T was sent to recover a painting of Rasputin for SERPENTOR. It delivered the painting but missed it's ride. It then followed SERPENTOR to Transylvania, where it nearly killed Wet-Suit before it was speared by Leatherneck. It went with SERPENTOR to recover a giant Cobra. While attacking LIFELINE and Wet-Suit, it was finally destroyed by very acidic venom.
A group of B ATS were used to attack the Joes during a visit by Bree Van Mark. Several B A TS were used as sailors when the Cobra took control of the Montana. A few B A TS were used as part of Cobra's force attacking the Statue of Liberty. Towe B A TS guarded the way to SERPENTOR'S throne room. They were shot down by the RENEGADES during the rescue of LT FALCON.
(Note: In the comics and D I C cartoon, B A TS were later replaced with a tougher model that had a blaster on the right arm. Also the cartoon featured an intelligent B A T named Overkill.)
