DUKE has been with the Joes since the begining. He is one of their best and most respected commanders. He has been known to drive the troops hard, but on the other hand, he never asks them to do something he would not do himself.
During the MASS DEVICE incident, DUKE was captured by Cobra. He broke free with the help of a slave woman named Selena. Unfortunately, the injuries he recieved while escaping rendered him amnesic. With the help of DOC, DUKE got his memory back and led the Joes to victory.
Later, DUKE and SNAKE-EYES were both captured by Cobra. They broke free temporarily and warned G.I.Joe about Cobra's plan to use the WEATHER DOMINATOR to destroy Washington DC. They finally teamed up with Roadblock and the civilian Honda Lou West to attack Cobra from within and save their fellow Joes.
During Cobra's scheme with the PYRAMID OF DARKNESS, DUKE was held prisoner aboard the G.I.Joe satellite. When he was freed by his troops, he came up the idea of using the satellite's laser against Cobra.
DUKE was a victim of Cobra's synthoid conspiracy. He freed himself and teamed up with Mutt to free the other generals that were imprisoned. DUKE later teamed with Dusty in a plan to trick Cobra into thinking Dusty was a traitor. Unfortunately, DUKE was injured by a bomb and could not tell the other Joes about the plan. When he recovered, he set the record straight.
When HAWK took field command of the Joes, DUKE was made his second-in-command. He confered with HAWK on how to stop Cobra from raiding the resting places of famous historical leaders. DUKE also helped lead the retaking of Washington DC from SERPENTOR.
DUKE led a sucessful Joe effort to defend the Statue of Liberty. He risked his life to carry a bomb to the Cobra aircraft carrier and made it with only seconds left. After that he led a mission to test the BET. When Cobra attacked, he used the BET to activate some automated weapons. DUKE also engaged in a hand-to-hand fight with SERPENTOR and won, resulting in the Cobra Emperor's capture.
DUKE sponsered a man named LT FALCON for membership. When FALCON was up for court martial, DUKE revealed that FALCON was his half-brother. The revelation saved FALCON, but he resented it and asked DUKE to stay out of his life.
DUKE led the ground troops in an effort to prevent Cobra from stealing the BET. He rallied the troops when they were overwhelmed by COBRA-LA technology. When FALCON was attacked by SERPENTOR, DUKE came to his aid. SERPENTOR threw a snakespear at FALCON but DUKE lunged in front and took it in the chest. As a result he lasped into a coma. Fortunately, he recovered about the same time the Joes destroyed COBRA-LA.
(Note: an orginal draft of G.I.JOE THE MOVIE had DUKE dying. There was a change of heart at the last minute and some lines were changed to show that he was only wounded.)
