"Knowledge is to know your Self" -- Yunus Emre |
RANDOM LINES FROM YUNUS EMRE I see my moon right here on earth, What would I do with the skies. Rains of mercy pour down on me From this ground where I fix my gaze. ** We love the created For the Creator's sake ** Many arc the wonders of the world, And none so wonderful as Man. ** The Providence that casts this spell And speaks so many tongues to tell, Transcends the earth, heaven and hell, But is contained in this heart's cast. The yearning tormented my mind: I searched the heavens and the ground; I looked and looked, but failed to find. I found Him inside man at last. ** You better seek God right in your own heart; He is neither in the Holy Land nor in Mecca. ** When love arrives, all needs and needs are gone. He glorified love as the soul's highest pride and joy: Can there be anything better than love? ** The man who feels the marvels of true love Abandons his religion and nation. |
My main source is http://www.mfa.gov.tr. As a native Turkish speaker with an interest in the perspective of Unity of Being (Vahdeti Vucud or Wadhat al-Woujd) I have interpreted some of the English translations. It was not very clear to me on the mfa.gov.tr page but I believe the original translator is Talat Sait Halman who probably based his translations on the Turkish scholar Abdulbaki GOLPINARLI's work on Yunus Emre (For some reason the Yunus Emre section is disappared at the mfav.gov.tr site. Hopefully someday it'll come back with more expanded sections. |
Soon after Rumi, Yunus Emre emerged as the most significant literary figure of the Turkish speaking world to spread the Sufi teachings by mystic poetry. For more than seven centuries, Yunus Emre and his poems have lived in the hearts of people. For Yunus, the cause of dual existence is love. It is through love that the unity of Being can be reached. Love is at once the cause and purpose of life on earth. The path leading to Unity passes through the heart. |
I am not here on earth for strife, Love is the mission of my life. Hearts are the home of the loved one; I came here to build each true heart. |
The road leading to knowledge is the same as the road leading to knowledge of God which means attainment of self-knowledge. Self knowledge forms the basis of every science: |
Science is to know knowledge Knowledge is to know your Self. If you don't know your Self, Then what's the point of your studies? |
The old link to mfav.gov.tr page on Yunus Emre which doesn't seem to work anymore. |
