Jim "JIM" Evans: A Personal Profile

Name:

Robert James Evans

Sex:

No, dammit!

Aliases:

Jim Evans; JIM; Hydrogen Guy; ZANDAR, King of the Mountain People

Born:

August 8th, 1974

Died:

August 11th, 2038

Email:

jevans@phyisics.uottawa.ca

Marital Status:

Very, very single.

Occupation:

Theoretical materials physicist. This means I consort with chemists and mineralogists. Ooo, scary!

Location:

University of Ottawa/Steacie Institute of Molecular Sciences, NRC

Research:

Currently I am writing my Master's thesis on calculating electric field gradients at octahedral Fe2+ sites in layer silicates. I will be starting my doctorate in January, hopefully continuing to work on the theoretical side of minerals.

Non-Research:

My alter-ego Hydrogen Guy has the powers of the element hydrogen, and spends his days fighting nefarious insurance companies, fashion designers with a passion for mecha, and evil lobsters.

Other Interests:

What does that mean?

Favourite...
...Doughnut:

Chocolate dipped.

...Pizza:

Hawaiian or the Fajita Chicken at Panagopolous.

...Cookie:

Chocolate chip with smarties, where the cookie is just at that borderline between soft and crunchy.

...Authors:

(In no particular order) P.G. Wodehouse, Guy Gabriel Kay, Larry Niven, Douglas Adams, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, Jeremy Burdett, Isaac Asimov, H.P. Lovecraft, Neil Gaiman, and whoever wrote the McGurk books. Those rocked.

... Books:

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams

And now for a controversial opinion:

I think the Dirk Gently books are much better than the Hitch-hiker's Guide, and that DNA has been wasting too much energy on various incarnations of those that he could used writing something new.

... Music:

Gadzooks... I'm hugely into jazz, but I also like classical (esp. J.S. Bach and his contemporaries), rock (Rush, AC/DC, Billy and the Boingers, too many others to mention), pop (Barenaked Ladies) and many things that I find difficult to categorize. Recent diversions: "Black Cat Blues" by Laika (despite the title it's vaguely electronic alternative thingy), "Live at Folson Prison" by Johnny Cash, "Cowboy Rhumba" by Neal Sublet.

... Jazz:

Dave Brubeck and Miles Davis, of course, are Gods Who Walk(ed) the Earth. Oscar Peterson rocks. Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan kick ass, especially when they got together. Maynard Ferguson is the Devil, but in a cool-groovy kind of way.

... Movie:

LA Story (Steve Martin).

... Exclamations:

"Great Feynman's Ghost!", "Hey Zeus!", "Whoa Lucile put the cat down!"

... Comic Strips:

Bloom County, Sluggy Freelance, PVP, Calvin and Hobbes, Triangle and Robert, Avalon

... Odour:

Vanilla.

... Gum:

Cinnamon - not sugar-free, either.

Any Other Comments?

I think the world would be a much nicer place if the only people allowed to wear orange pants were X-wing pilots.
