Esta familia, Leptodactylidae, corresponde a la raíz central del orden. Se subdivide a su vez en dos subfamilias; Leptodactylinae, y Telmatobinae, ambas con caracteres filéticos propios. Leptodactylinae está directamente relacionado con los anuros eo-oligocénicos patagónicos, conformando para Chile solo un género Pleurodema, con 3 especies, ninguna de las cuales es endémica.   Telmatobinae, presenta tendencia a la reducción máxima de los dientes en sus formas terminales, siendo el grupo de anuros de mayor antiguedad genética, y el con mayor presencia en número de géneros (10 géneros), y especies (29 especies) en el territorio nacional, siendo todas ellas endémicas.
