the death penalty
the state in which i live, michigan, does not allow people to be put to death for a crime   however the country in which i live, the united states of america, does   there are two countries in the world that still allow people to be capitally punished   one is the aforementioned united states, and the other is the peoples republic of china   most countries seem to have realized that this is an archaic practice that has no place in the world today   first of all, it does not deter crime   states with the death penalty do not have any less crime that those without   second of all, if "killing" is so wrong, why is it okay as long as the killing is being done by "the state"?   i think that a persons life should never be ended as a punishment for something   put them in prison, but i think it is hypocritical to kill them   so why are there executions anywhere then?   because people love to see other people die   its that simple   they would rather watch from afar, so as to not get their own hands dirty, but nevertheless they want to watch   i was pretty surprised that timothy mcveighs execution was not televised or on pay-per-view or anything   and speaking of mcveigh, you know what sickened me about the whole thing?   not the fact that he killed however many people (which, dont get me wrong, was a horrible tragedy and he should have went to prison probably forever for doing that...), not even the fact that his execution was put on closed circuit television for the families of the victims to watch, but the fact that the media made a mini-soap opera out of it   when he was taken into the room where he would take his last breath, he handed a guard a piece of paper with a poem on it instead of making "last words"   the poem was Invictus by william ernest henley   the day after mcveigh died, and i figured that maybe television would go back to "normal" and tell about other news stories, they actually had a "guest poetry analyst" on the news to break down "the meaning" of this poem, talk about the author, or just say anything really to let the people know what mcveigh was thinking by issuing this as his final statement   one reported even suggested something to the effect that, "if mcveigh was influenced by this poem, maybe we should have some kind of ban on william ernest henley's writings..."   do you have to graduate high school to get hired in the media?   do you think that this "poetry analyst" will ever be interviewed by these reporters again?   see, they didnt care about some poem that they couldnt understand, or didnt care to read for themselves, they wanted some kind of juicy story to milk every last drop they could out of timothy mcveigh   it was all ratings   the media loves capital punishment, it lets them bring the people what they want, which is apparently to watch "bad people get killed"   one more thing, the families of the victims who were in a room watching mcveigh die, do they not remember what it was like when they lost a family member?   obviously they do   so why would they be in favor of anyone getting killed, knowing that that person must have a family who will be going through the same thing later   the whole mentality of "i went through it, so you should have to also" is just sick to me   so i guess all we can do now is just sit back and wait for the next exciting serial killer to get caught so that we can watch him die, wont that be great?
