President’s Letter

Dear Members,
May was a busy month.  There seems to be a lot happening these days.  June can be one of the busy ones too.  Let’s make plans for anything we can do to advance our writing efforts. Keep the E-mail and phone calls rolling!
I keep reading and hearing about the Disney Institute “Bluebird Café” songwriters’ events.  There is one coming up June 10th, featuring Larry Cordle, Jerry Salley and Carl Jackson. I’d love for us to get a group together and attend.  Let’s talk about it Sunday.  If you have any ideas, call or E-mail Susan  (407) 679-4017, cybertoad @ yahoo.com or Annabelle (407) 654-9294, wosgien @ activecom.net
As most of you know, after my surgery has been hectic for me.  Plans for recrudescence are in order.  Thus far, I’ve not missed a meeting and lately have gotten out of bed to attend. I do so love the Guild and all of you.  Just you continue writing your great songs and make an effort to attend.
Saturday May 20th I attended the Casements Songwriters Showcase in Daytona.  It was like old home week.  Among familiar faces, Susan Foster-Trewick, John Fales, Bill Frank, Donna Fant, Mayor Ralph Betancourt etc.  I heard some great original songs.  Joe McCarthy had a great novelty song, “Cat in a hat”.  John, who seems to be into religious songs these days, even had a real man of the cloth, Pastor Kenneth Hope sing his latest hymn, “In his light”.  John was 1st place winner in our last months top 5 evaluation session, offering “My friend Jesus”.
I’m still in hopes of our Guild doing a similar showcase as a project with Full Sail School.  They have a great theatre and I enjoyed meeting and being a judge there recently.  My health has been in the way, just wait till I’m back in FULL SWING for FULL SAIL.  I hope we can work out a deal.
I want to thank Susan Foster-Trewick for helping out with the newsletter.  She does a great job.  Too, this reminds me, Bill Frank, who was helping with the newsletter, is now back from a business trip to Turkey.  He reported at the Casements affair that he has been very ill, and missed our May meeting due to the “BAD” water in Turkey.
Hope everyone shows up Sunday with your latest hit on tape (live if you’d rather).  We’ve had some goodies here of late.  Keep up the good work.
Best ever,
Russ

Web Chatter
Hi folks
Here’s your friendly Cybertoad to give you some more interesting songwriting links on the World Wide Web.
http://www.danmansmusic.com/songs2.htm
This is a website with lyrics, chords, tablature to an incredible amount of songs, if you play other peoples music.
http://www.ascap.com
This is a website for the American Society of Authors and Performers, one of the major Performing rights societies
http://www.performingsongwriter.com
This is for the magazine by the same name. It encourages independent artists, and there are extensive lists of festivals, competitions, and organizations. (We need to see about getting our Guild listed in here too.)
http://www.irenejackson.com
This is the website of a songwriter/teacher/author of various articles, with interesting tips on songwriting and recording your demos.
http://www.musesmuse.com
This is another songwriter’s website (Jodi Krangle). This web site comes up a lot if you do much searching on the internet. She has won many awards for the website design, and, like Irene, she has some very good tips and links.
If any of you have any web sites you recommend, please    E-mail them to me. I am yours faithfully.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME  . . . KOOL BEANZ  CD                    j
"Dig it, man, you’ve got to dig it, man!" - Nick Caffeine's intro
You certainly have to dig the tremendous effort put forth in the collaboration, production and release of the "Home Away From Home ... Kool Beanz" compact disc. The disc is a compilation of eighteen songs from seventeen of the regular performers at Kool Beanz Coffeehouse in Cocoa Village, Florida to benefit the burgeoning Brevard County, FL acoustic/folk community.  Sixteen of the songs are original compositions of the artists, and two are traditional.
Three songs written and performed by members of the International Songwriters Guild are included on "Home Away From Home ... Kool Beanz".  Steve Bussey and his band Big Red & The Bus recorded "Guns Flash". Laura Lucie & Seven Richard of Laura & Seven performed "California Is My Home", and Bob -"Stormcrow" Sanders submitted "Life In The 90's".  You can hear a soundbite of "Guns Flash" by calling 800 235 9193, or you can download a MP3 file at www.riffage.com (enter "Big Red" in the search field).
"Java" John Goldacker, the co-owner (with wife Jennifer) of Kool Beanz and producer of this CD explains his motivation, "Kool Beanz has seen literally hundreds of fine acoustic musicians grace it's stage in the past 2 years, and we wanted to start a series of CDs featuring these Artists, mostly singer/songwriters, to help promote them. And in turn promote Kool Beanz - 'Brevard's Premier Acoustic CoffeeHouse'. Also we hope to gain attention for Fred Migliore's 'Another Unconventional Sunday Morning' radio show on public radio WFIT 89.5 FM, possibly the only radio show that features acoustic music & original talent in Brevard County. It's kinda like a circle...we wash each others backs, so to say -Keeping the Folk Alive!".
Other artists on the CD include Willie Hunton, Bryan Mccahill, Matt Riley, Rocky D'Andrea, Honeybucket Hillbilly Band, Dave Grooms, Terry Kelly, Janet Reedy, Steve Setron, A Scortino & norm mcdonald. Brad Keeler & Kirn Roque, Mike Runion, Steve Hodak, Sam Pacetti, Will Pearsall & Steve Shanholtzer, and Nick Caffeine and the CoffeeKats.
The CD was recorded live September 26 and October 1 and 2 at Kool Beanz.  All of the artists donated their performances, the recording services were donated by Grant Recording Services, Bluesboro Studios, and Geosynchronous Records, Kevin Derois of Bluesboro Studios said, "I thought it was a wonderful experience to get to work with so many artists experienced in recording and performing, Kool Beanz is a great place to see and hear live music".  Dave Grooms donated the Polaroid art for the rear cover, the graphic design and photos were donated by Steve Bussey. Additional support was provided by Cocoa Village merchants Contemporary Concerts, Cafe Margaux, Web Engineering & Beyond the Rainbow.

The CD can be purchased at Kool Beanz (321 638 4855) or by mail: send check or money order for $15.90 plus $2 shipping to: KOOL BEANZ, 7 Rosa L. Jones Dr., Cocoa Village, FL. 32922 or visit:  www.koolbeanz.com .   Hopefully, "Home Away From Home ... Kool Beanz" will help to sustain the acoustic/folk movement in the area, and there will be more compact discs in the future.
