Editorial
On 15 August 2008, two and a half months after the proclamation of the republic Comrade Pushpa Kamal Dahal (party name: Prachanda), chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) was elected by the constituent assembly to become the first prime minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal. Only a decade long people’s war led by CPN(M) made the overthrow of absolute monarchy possible. What has been achieved up to now is an outstanding success by which the politically conscious workers and progressive people’s masses all over the world are filled with gratification and are spurred on. In solidarity we expect that with the current step the revolutionary process has not at all come to a standstill. At the same time we denounce in all strictness the contemptuous and arrogant Kautsky attitude of some leftist forces from the imperialist flab zones who want to cover up their own failures at their frontlines of world revolution by playing arrogant experts in far away countries. (Compare: Lenin, “Proletarian Revolution and the Renegade Kautsky”). Of course, the Nepalese comrades, too, know the historic experiences of the International Communist Movement including the failed socialist experiments of the 20th century.
The oldest readers of PR will certainly remember the revolutionary offensive in Peru in the last quarter of the 20th century. Then a fundamental mood against proletarian internationalism fanned by pro-imperialist forces contributed to the failure of the movement. Will news items as the following rouse “our” metropolitan know-it-all from their lethargy anyhow?! “Mass grave discovered in Peru – In the south of Peru medical experts discovered a mass grave with the bodies of 123 men, women and children from the times of guerilla war. The mass grave is situated in the province of Ayacucho where the armed forces during their fight against the Maoist insurgents of the ‘Shining Path’ organisation killed numerous villagers in the eighties and nineties. According to information by the truth commission set up by the government the troops offered the village of Putis to fleeing villagers as a retreat in 1984. The people however were killed because of alleged connections with guerilla fighters and had to dig their own graves before.” (FAZ, 26 May 2008) Solidarity with the political prisoners in Peru!
The connection between politics and sports, especially within the scope of mass events (such as European Championship or Olympic Games), cannot be overlooked.
The games in Beijing ended with an impressive balance of results of the hosts. The upset anti-Chinese propaganda in the interest of imperialist powers is continuing. Our front picture reminds of a political statement at the olympic games in Mexico in 1968 that created world-wide attention to the liberation struggle of the Afro-Americans. The names of the athletes are: Tommie Smith, Peter Norman and John Carlos (from left to right). For this we bring extracts from a current interview with Carlos, who is today 63 years old, throwing light on the background of that struggle.
“The situation is the same as in ’68: in Prague and Paris. The cafes have poured into the streets. Should the government be impressed by these green enthusiasts as then the Czech one they will promply eat bare each field. Should the government as in France not at all listen they will have never been here.” (Peter Hacks, 1989, still before the break-down of GDR in a letter to a friend).
The epoch making year of 1968 led to deep-going breaks on all continents. The tanks of social imperialism in Prague marked the beginning of the end of the authoritarian bureaucratic state capitalism oriented on Moskow.
The current war in the Caucasus recalls to memory the fatal continuity from the tsarist despoty through the new bourgeoisie under Breshnev to Russia turned neo-liberal under Putin and Medvedev.
In Austria personality cult is again booming. The cards are dealt anew because the character masks of the parliamentarily embellished dictatorship of the monopoly capital are wearing out faster and faster. At the same time Austrian imperialism is heavily present with 15 missions of the federal army world-wide. Nevertheless the Social Democrat minister of war wants to increase the relevant funds (the Tchad mission has already been paid from the development aid budget!)
No woman, no man and no cent for this system backed by all parliamentary parties in unanimity!
We are sorry that the continuation of the Turkish translation of the History of the Austrian working class movement from the view-point of the fifties of the last century must temporarily be interrupted.
Instead of that there are three contributions in this PR dealing with the experiences of our movement in the last century: Revolutionary crisis 90 years ago, the development of the Austrian workers movement from 1934 to the present time, and on the history of the CP Austria.
The Communist Party of Austria was founded on 3 November 1918. We are especially glad to pre-announce the next issue of Proletarian Revolution that will take up this occasion and will as a whole be devoted to this once glorious party. In content we will pay attention especially to the breaks in the history of this organisation: Revolutionary communist beginnings – standing the crucial test in anti-fascist struggle – outpost of Moskow social imperialism – petty-bourgeois system party of today. Place your advance orders now!
As always looking forward to your suggestions and critiques,
Yours
