AUTHOR'S NOTE: This story asks the question "What IF Anya and Dimitri never told their children about Anya's royal background, heritage, or birthrite?"

She ran her fingertips over the beautiful new dresser.
It was perfect, just as she'd ordered.

"I don't think this is a good idea", he said, frowning
at her.

She ignored him and opened the top right drawer; it
was small and would be perfectly suited for the task
she'd planned for it to serve.

"For once, listen to me", he said, pulling her away
from it.  "It won't hurt to let them know".

"No, it will.  They'll grow up thinking they have all
the money in the world, and they have the right to
wear crowns and be served on silver platters.  And
that isn't right.  WE didn't grow up like that!  I
want my children to be sensible, able to do things for
themselves... I don't want them to know any of it".
She turned back to the dresser and placed a newsclip
in the bottom of the drawer, and on top of that, 2
dried roses and a photograph.  Lastly, she picked up
her necklace.  It sparkled brightly in the afternoon
sunlight that was streaming in through the window.
She paused before placing it into the drawer as well.

"What about the music box?"

"What about it?"

"Well hadn't you better put it in there too?  If you
want to hide all your memories and past, then that
belongs with it".  His voice was almost mocking and it
dripped with sarcasm.  She ignored that too.

"No, I want it to stay on top.  I like it.  If anyone
that doesn't know asks what it is, I'll just say it
was a jewelry box I got long ago.  They won't know the
difference.  And I'm NOT hiding my memories, I just
don't want them to know about everything yet!"

She shut the drawer and locked it as well; hopefully
that would prevent anyone from getting inside.  She
then hide the key in her closet, where no one would
find THAT either.

He sighed, and then pulled her close.  "One day" he
said slowly, "One day... you'll HAVE to tell them".

She let herself rest in his strong arms and she put
her head against his chest.  "One day" she replied, "I
will tell them...  just not now..."
